Statistics from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a biennial report of the United States Department of Education, indicate that Catholic schools outperform public school counterparts in almost all categories. In particular, according to the report, Catholic schools performed at or near the top in reading and math compared to public schools coming out of the pandemic... As one commentator observed, if Catholic schools were a state, they would be the highest performing state in the country. The data also indicates that Catholic schools are near the top in learning outcomes for students receiving free and reduced-price lunch, demonstrating Catholic schools’ commitment to underprivileged students…
Our students here at Holy Cross School continue to perform well in the standardized tests required by the State of Indiana and, in general, compare well to students at the other Catholic schools in the area. Perhaps more importantly, our students are learning to think critically at age-appropriate levels, guided by incredibly dedicated faculty and staff. We can be proud of the Christian education that our school offers its students. I encourage you to support the efforts of our school as opportunities arise throughout the school year.

CITY TO OFFER SIGN-UP EVENTS FOR UTILITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

The City of South Bend has partnered with several community organizations to host a series of sign-up events to help eligible South Bend residents apply for assistance programs that can help cover past-due water bills as well as current and future payments for electric, heating and water expenses. Staff members from these organizations will be available to walk residents through the sign-up process and answer any questions they may have.

The Utility Assistance Program helps customers reduce their water and sewer bill by up to $25.50 every month if they meet income guidelines and receive sewer service from the City. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is a federally funded program that provides a one-time annual benefit during winter months to assist qualifying households with electric, heating and water expenses.

A schedule of current sign-up events will be added to southbendin.gov/support once they are finalized.
