Afghan Refugee Update

MCSS is currently in the process of helping as many recently arrived refugee families in Austin as we come to know about. We have provided meals, food vouchers, clothing and household items to the evacuees. Many, if not all, left everything behind in order to be evacuated to the USA and their needs for even basic items continue to be high.

200 Afghan Evacuees have been resettled to Austin in just the month of October.  There are 300 more evacuees expected in the next few weeks.

We are raising funds for jackets and blankets for the families we serve and who continue to arrive. Please donate generously to help us to continue to provide what they need.

MCSS Is also looking for very gently used (like new) rugs, couches, home decor items and household items. Please email us at admin@mcssatx.com with pictures. Thank you!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Did you know that over half of the clients we help are domestic violence survivors? We help our survivors find shelter, pay bills, provide food, clothing and pay lawyer fees to keep their family safe. Often times people suffering abuse do not leave because of their inability to support themselves, MCSS does what we can to help break the cycle of abuse.

What is Domestic Violence:
Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors used to maintain power and control over a partner in an intimate relationship.

Types of Domestic Violence:
There are many different forms of domestic violence, many of which occur at the same time.

  • Physical
  • Sexual
  • Emotional
  • Economic
  • Verbal
  • Stalking
  • Digital
How Abuse Affects Victims:
  • Feel helpless and isolated
  • Withdraw emotionally
  • Feel anxious and fearful for self and children
  • Unable to make own decisions or can not due to lack of financial freedom
  • Have religious, cultural, or other beliefs that reinforce staying in the relationship
  • Fear cultural, community, or societal backlash that may hinder escape or support
  • Feel like they have nowhere to go or no ability to get away
How can you help? By learning about and becoming aware about the signs and symptoms of domestic violence and abuse.  If you would like to learn more please visit The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
