Afghan Evacuee Update

As we all tuck in to Thanksgiving meals with our families and friends, please remember the recent refugee and evacuee families who are facing food insecurity. Currently, Austin has received 400 evacuees from Afghanistan and another 200 are expected by the end of the year. We are working tirelessly to help resettle the families in to their homes and provide them with what they need.

MCSS is providing food vouchers, groceries, gift cards, clothing, rugs, cell phones, and baby items. As ever, your financial support is how we continue our work.  Please consider sharing your generosity today to help us feed and support evacuees and refugees.

Salaam Neighbor Program

In an effort to work collaboratively and effectively in resettling evacuees from Afghanistan, MCSS is working closely with Austin Jews for Refugees and Refugee Services of Texas (RST).

We are happy to announce the initiative of a new program: Salaam Neighbor

The Salaam Neighbors program pairs a group of volunteers with a refugee family, in partnership with Refugee Services of Texas (RST). Volunteers will assist one or more Afghan families with specific tasks that will help them adjust and thrive in Austin, including:

  • bus orientations
  • shopping for groceries
  • using cell phones and other technology
  • organizing baby showers for new mothers
  • providing families with transportation to medical and benefits related appointments, job interviews, ESL classes

Salaam Neighbors groups may also take the families to libraries, parks and other places of interest, experiencing the favorite spots that Austinites love!

Salaam Neighbors groups will consist of a group of 2-10 individuals or 1-3 families who will commit to work together in a volunteer capacity to help the refugee family over the 3 month period.

If you are interested in participating or learning more about this program, please attend a zoom information session on

December 21, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
