Play Equipment in Kells Lane Park
Residents have approached us about the play equipment in Kells Lane Park. The Focus Team have raised this with the Council who tell us that they are still waiting for new crossbars for the swings but the basket has now been replaced by a new (but smaller) version.
Tolls on the Tyne Bridge?
Gateshead Council, along with Newcastle and North Tyneside Councils, are planning to introduce either a charging Clean Air Zone or tolls on three bridges across the Tyne.

Neither of these options are good. Charging everyone regardless of vehicle emissions does nothing to encourage people to buy less polluting vehicles, and will shift the problem to Blaydon (and therefore result in higher emissions from diverted journeys). On the other hand, the daily charge for highly polluting vehicles won’t meet the stated aim of raising money for investment and will hit those who can least afford to buy new cars the hardest.

It is alarming that Gateshead Council, along with Newcastle and North Tyneside, are pushing ahead with their plans with such short timescales. We hope that they listen to ideas from residents coming out of the public consultation. You can complete the consultation by visiting here

Daniel Duggan said "We have called for public meetings in Gateshead so that traffic planners can discuss this direct with drivers and others effected, such as local businesses. It's important that the Council really engage with and listen to residents on this."
Cutting the number of Gateshead Councillors
Gateshead Lib Dems have long been calling for the number of Councillors in Gateshead to be cut.

However, Labour claim that the number of Gateshead Councillors cannot be reduced. It is odd then that Carlisle Council is being reduced from 54 to 39 councillors after opposition councillors lobbied the Boundary Commission. Their argument was the same as ours - why should the number of councillors not be reduced when every other service is being cut?

Ron Beadle said "Labour in Gateshead will cut everything except the number of Councillors and their allowances".

£11,000 spent on rebuilding wall
Residents have raised with us the poor state of the wall at the bottom of Lowrey's Lane car park. Since the wall was built, it has fallen down on at least two occasions and the Council has spent £10,899.68 just on repairing it.

Susan Craig said "The Focus Team are asking the Council to remove this section of the wall as it was never wanted or needed in the first place. The Council faces some big challenges and it is alarming to see them spending so much on this when public services are being cut".

Have you spotted examples of Council waste that need addressing? If so, let us know by replying to this email so we can raise this with Council officers.

Can you help the Focus Team do more for Low Fell?
The Low Fell Focus Team works hard all year round and provide a regular newsletter, 'Focus on Low Fell', to all households in Low Fell. We rely on local residents to help deliver this. Would you be able to spare an hour or so every few months to deliver some newsletters near to where you live? If so, please get in touch by replying to this email.
