Low Fell's Christmas lights 'switch on'!
We are very much looking forward to Low Fell's Christmas switch-on, which for many marks the start of Christmas in Low Fell.

The event will be held at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday 27th November, at the tree located outside of Rosa Twelve restaurant.

Alfie Joey of Radio Newcastle will be coming along to host and we will be joined by local residents, school children, Bluebell Theatre Productions and the Caprian Theatre Company.

Musical accompaniment will be provided by Craghead Colliery Band - and children from Oakfield School and St. Peter's RC Primary School will be singing for us as well as some of the pantomime cast from the Bluebell Theatre.

The tree will be all ready to be lit up thanks to the school children who have decorated baubles and the Low Fell Volunteer Gardening Group who will decorate the area around the tree.

There will be refreshments on the day provided by  Rosa Twelve restaurant and Kip McGrath will be handing goodie bags out to the children.

Last but not least, many thanks to our sponsors, who have helped towards funding this year's tree and lights. They are:
  • BCE Northern Ltd.
  • Belle Vue Estates
  • Dean Taxis
  • Eve Trew School of Dance
  • Gateshead Arms
  • Imperial Restaurant
  • Kip McGrath
  • Nisa store
  • Spot On Window Cleaning Services

Susan Craig, Chair of Low Fell Forum, said "This will be the ninth switch-on event organised by the Low Fell Forum, and we hope that everyone will come along and enjoy this wonderful community event. There is limited parking, so people are advised to arrive on foot or by public transport if possible.”
Residents pay their respects at Low Fell's Remembrance Service

On the 11th November hundreds of local residents, school children, business owners, representatives from various organisations, and others came to the Boer War Memorial on Durham Road to take part in Low Fell's Service of Remembrance.

Low Fell Councillor Daniel Duggan, who laid a wreath on behalf of Low Fell residents, said "I was deeply honoured to lay a wreath in remembrance of all the service men and women who have given their lives for our freedom. It was wonderful to see so many people there to pay their respects".

Low Fell Councillor Susan Craig, who as Chair of Low Fell Forum laid a wreath on behalf of the Forum, said "Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to organise this important event, including the volunteers from the Low Fell Forum and the support from Gateshead Council, and which has allowed us an opportunity to reflect and remember together as a community. Thank you also to Rev Huw Sperring and Rev Alex Crawford, and the the Carlton Club for the wonderful refreshments after the Service".

Peter Maughan in running to be Gateshead's next MP!
Liberal Democrats in the Gateshead constituency have chosen Peter Maughan as their candidate for the snap general election on 12th December.

Peter has considerable experience of representing residents of the borough where he has been a councillor for the past 25 years.

He is also a solicitor, giving him invaluable experience of helping people, a skill he wants to use to fight for a better deal for Gateshead and the North East.

“Labour believe they have an automatic right to rule here but I will be taking the fight right to Labour’s door,” said Peter.

“As a councillor in Gateshead for the past 25 years, I understand the needs, hopes and aspirations of local residents. I also know from talking to people on doorsteps that they are fed up with Labour and Jeremy Corbyn and are looking for a new political home.

“I am fighting hard to bring ex-Labour voters over to the Liberal Democrats.”

Outside of politics and work, Peter is a strong advocate of animal welfare. He is chairman of Newcastle upon Tyne and North Northumberland branch of the RSPCA. Many rescue animals have found a home at his house in Whickham.

Peter is also a board member of the Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust.

Low Fell Business Survey: The results are in!
Recently, the Focus Team provided local businesses with a survey to find out about their priorities and how we can work together to improve the Fell. Many businesses have now returned the survey and we have been looking at the results.

Ron Beadle said "Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our survey. The results will help us to stand up for Low Fell when we discuss matters with Council officers. From the feedback it's clear that more needs to be done to keep our streets clean so Low Fell is an attractive place to shop. Unfortunately, Gateshead Council spends the least on street cleaning as a percentage share of their budget of all Councils in Tyne and Wear. We have proposed that the street cleaning budget be increased, but sadly Labour councillors voted against this.

Daniel Duggan added "Business owners are also concerned about the impact that car parking charges are having on the Fell. The Council promised to carry out a review of car parking charges two years ago, but have so far failed to do this. We are continuing to press them to do this.

Susan Craig said "Otherwise, it was clear that business owners are really grateful for the Christmas tree and lights that we and the Low Fell Forum help organise every year with many commenting that it helps local businesses in the run up to Christmas. They also commented on how important the Low Fell Volunteer Gardeners are in keeping Low Fell looking great".

Well done to St Peter's RC Primary School!
A big well done to the children of the choir of St Peter's RC Primary School. The choir recently performed at the Royal Albert Hall and did their school proud. Well done all!

Ron Beadle said "We were delighted to support the Friends of St Peter's in their fundraising efforts by donating £500 from the Local Community Fund so that the choir could take up this great opportunity. The children should be very proud of themselves".

Focus Team meet with the Police
Recently, Low Fell's Councillors met with the police to discuss the issue of crime in Low Fell. Below are the figures for reported crime in the Low Fell ward. These show the categories of crime that people have asked us about most often. They compare this summer and last summer.
Recently, the police arrested a man and a woman for shoplifting in Low Fell and we are grateful to the police for their swift action and helping to keep Low Fell safe. You can read more about this here

The police have urged residents to always report crime, including anti-social behaviour, and to make sure vehicles are locked. If it is a non-emergency, please phone 101.
