Read In Case Of Emergency
A weekly newsletter on ethics, policy & society
  • The Accidental Urbanist – Dar Williams & Susannah Black, Plough – This interview is too beautiful to sum up, so here is a quote. “If you don’t have some communitarianism in your belief system, and you just think small government means you’ll have more freedom, you’ll find quickly that you’re governed by something else.”
  • The Internet of Beefs – Venkatesh Rao, Ribbonfarm – This essay is extremely online, so we apologize for any of the vocabulary deployed. But under all the inscrutable terms is an incisive analysis of contemporary rhetoric, particularly as found on Twitter, how it functions and why it works that way. Ultimately, the problem comes down to no one knowing who they are and their place, their role, in this world. Along the way, he points out that the culture war is necessarily without an attainable end, a forever war of hatred, so don’t miss that.

  • Linsanity, A Botched Headline And An ESPN Editor's Journey To The Priesthood – Martin Kessler, Only a Game – Anthony Federico foolishly, accidentally wrote and published a racial slur in a headline. You can probably guess what happened next: he was, as they say, cancelled. But this story continues with forgiveness from a fellow believer and eventually even ordination.

  • A Christian Critique of Equity – Raymond Downing, Christian Community Health Fellowship – Dr. Raymond Downing, one of East Africa’s Family Medicine pioneers, died this week of prostate cancer. (You can read more about his misdiagnosis of that cancer here.) One of our faithful readers suggested this article by Ray, about how to understand and fight for (or perhaps not fight for) equity, in light of the Bible, and we can think of no better way to honor a man who spent his entire life thinking and writing about how to love one’s neighbor when he wasn’t busy actually doing it. His other works are also very much worth reading.
