The Wellington Section Committee has agreed that the responsible and safest approach, while in Covid Level 2, is to postpone of our section evening scheduled for tomorrow evening.

Les Molly has kindly agreed to shift his presentation to Wednesday 3rd March, assuming we are back at Level 1. So please make a note in your diary - Southern Cross Tavern Backroom, from 6pm, Wednesday 3rd March. See you there..

You are invited to join us for our first section night of the year Wednesday March 3rd  6 -7pm at the Southern Cross 39 Abel Smith St Te Aro.

The section nights are an opportunity to meet other members, share, plan alpine adventures and be inspired by others.

This month Les Molloy will be giving his talk – “Searching for Wilderness …. because they’re not making any more of it!” is an illustrated account of his past involvement in wilderness conservation in the mountains of New Zealand.

Dr Les Molloy was a natural heritage consultant with a background in soil science (DSIR) and a lifelong interest in mountaineering -- and national park, wilderness and other protected area identification and management (including 10 years in the Department of Conservation). In the 1960s and 1970s, Les’s passion was exploring the remoter parts of the Southern Alps and Fiordland, especially the mountains eventually protected as the Olivine Wilderness Area.

Les is the author of 8 books, 7 of them on the scientific values and conservation needs of NZ’s natural environment. They include the 2014 updated edition of “New Zealand’s Wilderness Heritage”, first published by Craig Potton Publishing in 2007.

Les has spent most of his lifetime trying to achieve better protection for NZ’s mountain wilderness, particularly as a past member of the executive of the Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ (FMC), and through membership of government quangos like the National Parks Authority and the Nature Heritage Fund. In 2020, the federation’s clubs elected him as their patron.

We look forward to seeing you there.
