Equity Committee adopts Mission and Vision

For the past few months, a group of Rinehart Clinic and Pharmacy employees and community members have been meeting to talk about the importance of health equity.

Background:  The discussions around health equity have been occurring more broadly and deeply over the last couple of years among staff, and several improvements have already been made. In 2018, trainings were organized for all staff on cultural sensitivity and how to effectively work with language interpreters to help patients understand their care options. We also contracted with a new language interpretation service that provides on-site interpreters whenever possible to work directly with patients and their providers (and live video when in-person is not possible). Earlier this year, two of our staff members were honored with a Health Equity Award from the Oregon Primary Care Association recognizing their role in the improvements that have been made. But they, and others, knew the work must continue, and so the Equity Committee was formed.

What is Health Equity? The definitions vary widely, but for the Rinehart Clinic Equity Committee, health equity means that everyone should have the health care and opportunities needed to lead healthy lives. And these opportunities could vary depending on a person’s life circumstances. Equality is everyone having the same access; equity is recognizing each person’s individual circumstances (financial, identity, language, background, etc.) and tailoring the care to suit that individual’s needs.

We know that many people have barriers to accessing health care. The Rinehart Clinic team feels strongly that health care organizations must recognize these challenges and help reduce as many of the barriers as possible so that all people receive quality health care that is delivered with respect and dignity.

After much discussion, the committee adopted the following mission and vision statements.

Mission:  Acknowledging the impact of systemic oppression on health, the Equity Committee’s mission is to foster a culture that is committed to providing equitable healthcare for all in our community.

Vision:  The Equity Committee believes the diversity of our experiences and perspectives makes our community stronger, healthier, and safer. We are committed to holding the healthcare system accountable, including the team at Rinehart Clinic & Pharmacy, for providing equitable healthcare for all. We will work to identify and eliminate inequities, both internal and external, by modeling practices that promote health equity, by adopting policies and procedures that support the mission, and by collaborating with key partners to further understanding and accountability.

The committee recognizes that drafting a mission statement is just the first step in moving these efforts forward. Now the real work begins of making sure Rinehart Clinic is a shining example of a community health center that provides equitable care for all. The committee has strong support from the administration and the board of directors, who recognize the importance of this work.

Watch for updates on the committee's work on the Rinehart Clinic bulletin boards. If you have ideas or input to share about this or any other matter related to Rinehart Clinic or Pharmacy, we encourage you to fill out a feedback form (located at the front desk).
