Special Edition:  COVID-19 UPDATE

Message from Rinehart Clinic's Medical Director

The care team at Rinehart Clinic wants to assure our patients that we are staying up-to-date on the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. We are focused on the health and well-being of our patients and staff, and we are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe and healthy.

We receive regular updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Oregon Health Authority to make sure we are informed on the latest recommendations and statewide guidelines. We are also part of the Tillamook Medical Advisory Group, alongside many other healthcare and social service agencies across Tillamook County, to make sure we are part of a county-wide network of collaborative care should that become necessary.

We know there is a lot of information about the coronavirus in the news, and we understand it can be unsettling, even scary, to hear how quickly the situation is evolving. Please know that the Rinehart Clinic and Pharmacy team remains committed to the health and well-being of our patients, our customers, and the entire community.

Dr. Jeffrey Luty, MD
Rinehart Clinic Medical Director

About the coronavirus (COVID-19)

Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever and lower respiratory problems like cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain when breathing or coughing.

Upper respiratory symptoms like stuffy nose, runny nose, ear pain, or facial pain are generally NOT associated with COVID-19.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO PATIENTS:  If you have symptoms of COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone who may have it, PLEASE CALL THE CLINIC BEFORE YOU COME IN so we can discuss your symptoms and determine the best course of action.

Avoiding the coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following:
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • STAY HOME when you are sick.
  • WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Learn more from the CDC website:
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. (And don’t forget to wash your hands afterwards.)
  • Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Facemasks should be used by people who have symptoms of COVID-19 (or any contagious disease) to keep from spreading the virus to others. The CDC does not recommend facemasks for people who are well.
How are we keeping germ-free here at Rinehart Clinic and Pharmacy? We are diligent about making sure our facility is as germ-free as possible. All the cleaners we use in the clinic and pharmacy are hospital grade, and we are regularly wiping down all doorknobs, counters, equipment, and other hard surfaces even more frequently than we normally do. All staff have reviewed proper hand-washing methods according to the CDC. Our normal practice is to wash our hands well (and often) but a refresher never hurts!

Tips for Boosting your Immune System

A strong immune system can help you stay well even if you are exposed to germs. Here are some tips from Liz Vitale, Rinehart Clinic’s Acupuncturist, and Dr. Andersen, our Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, on things you can do to boost your immune system.

EAT WELL - Drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet with little or no sugar and avoid processed foods. Sugar can actually help viruses grow, so avoiding it is helpful. Some foods have antiviral properties (among them: ginger, turmeric, apple cider vinegar).

GET GOOD SLEEP - Try to allow time for as much sleep as your body needs. Sleep helps your body heal and rejuvenate.

BE ACTIVE - Exercising regularly is one of the best ways to keep your body strong and resilient. Try to get in at least 15-30 minutes of physical activity several times a week.

REDUCE STRESS - We know, easier said than done sometimes, but here are some ideas that may help: meditation, making time for an activity you enjoy, exercise, a walk with a friend.

And of course, keep washing your hands regularly and take precautions to avoid people you know are sick.
