Inside Rinehart Clinic:  Naturopathic Medicine

Dr. Eli Andersen, NDMany of you have already met or heard about Dr. Eli Andersen, our Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND), who joined the Rinehart Clinic team in July of 2018. But some of you might not know exactly how a Naturopath is different than (or the same as) a Medical Doctor.

Is a Naturopath a real doctor? Yes, an ND is a real doctor. Naturopathic Doctors (also known as Naturopaths) train at four-year graduate level medical school programs at accredited naturopathic medicine schools. Just like a Medical Doctor, they are educated in biomedical science, clinical sciences, and diagnostics, and have extensive hands-on clinical training. As medical students, they learn to treat all aspects of health and wellness, from pediatrics to geriatrics and have a strong foundation in physiology, pathology, diagnosis, and pharmacology.

Dr. Andersen (like all licensed NDs) can treat urgent medical needs, perform minor surgeries, and prescribe medications.

What is the difference between an MD and an ND? In a nutshell, a Medical Doctor (MD) is focused on treating the disease; a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is focused on finding and addressing the underlying cause of the disease. Both MDs and NDs can be Primary Care Physicians. The training NDs receive qualifies them as experts in preventive care, primary care, and chronic care.

Naturopaths tend to use a more integrative approach to care and a broader range of therapies. These can include plant-based medicines, nutritional science (food as medicine), behavioral health/change counseling, body manipulation techniques, and more.

It is unusual for a small rural community health center to have an ND as one of its Primary Care Physicians and we are proud to be at the forefront of offering broader healthcare options.

Dr. Andersen is recognized as a Primary Care Provider (PCP) by Columbia Pacific CCO. For other insurance plans (including Medicare) that cover NDs as Specialists rather than PCPs, we have a sliding fee scale and other payment options available to help reduce out-of-pocket costs for patients.

Dr. Andersen is accepting new patients. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the clinic at 1-800-368-5182.
