Remembering Symposium Founder, Friend and Mentor
George Luste (1940-2015)
It's usually around this time, in the final stretch before the Symposium, that I miss George the most. The living room at 139 Albany Street would be choke-full of boxes with books, with Linda firmly in charge of various lists. I would bring a hearty Serbian breakfast - usually burek, and sometimes my Mom's pastries - on Sunday morning. An interesting topic, a distant memory would often percolate to the surface and George would pick up a thread of the story long forgotten, while I lean back in the chair and take it all in.
1987 Symposium, Year 2. Good to see so many of you kept the flame alive after all those years!
Most of you knew George, and have been coming to the Symposium for decades. Some of you never missed it since the first gathering in 1986. Many of you are his and Linda's friends. Lucky few canoed with George.
And there are more and more of you who are new to the Symposium, and never knew George personally. I appreciate the opportunity to reach out to all of you with few cherished memories of our time well spent together with George, regardless of where and how. We are forever indebted to George for blazing the trail we walk on today. Enjoy listening to his 2013 WCS Introductory Remarks.

Dave Hadfield played many times at Symposium over the years. He composed a wonderful tribute to George that we sang together on 20 February, 2016 at 31st Wilderness and Canoe Symposium. Take a listen!
