Hello from Move To Heal South Dakota | April 2022

We are coming to the end of the month but not without sharing some important updates! See what we've been up to and what you can look forward to next in May.

Highlights this month include:
  • Our Founder & Executive Director shares her 3 wins in April
  • Grant writing to test, develop and scale our Healing Arts initiatives
  • Who do you move for? fundraising campaign prep
Easy as 1, 2, 3! Our Founder and Executive Director, Sydney Bartunek Bender, is sharing the good news this month.
  1. Sydney was selected as one of the leaders that will represent the 2022 class of Sutton Leaders. The non-partisan Billie Sutton Leadership Institute is dedicated to inspiring and preparing the next generation of leaders to build a stronger South Dakota and more vibrant communities and workplaces through service to others. She will be focusing her Community Engagement Plan on supporting the mission of Move To Heal South Dakota.
  2. As a 2022 Emerging Leader Scholarship receipt, Sydney will attend the South Dakota Arts Conference this May to spend time with the states creative community to absorb keynotes, workshops, panels, creative excursions, performances, and networking opportunities.
  3. Last but not least, this month Sydney decided it was time to take the leap of faith to spend dedicated time on Move To Heal South Dakota! EXCITING, right!? If you've been following her journey since founding the nonprofit organization in December 2019, you may have known she was working full-time in marketing alongside this venture. Well starting in May, she has opened up some time to spend with the organization!

This May Move To Heal South Dakota is launching our first-annual Who do you move for? fundraising campaign!

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides arts-based movement and mindfulness classes and experiences, our who has always been the most important.

Research supports the fact that arts-based movement and mindfulness provides ongoing physical, emotional and spiritual health benefits and that is our why –
now let us share more on who we are called to serve.

At the core of Move To Heal South Dakota, we move for children that have experienced ACEs. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic childhood events that can create dangerous levels of stress and can negatively impact the development of a child's brain and body.

In South Dakota, 21.3% youth have experienced one or more ACE and 20% have experienced two or more. Of these youth, 9.7% lived with anyone who was mentally ill, suicidal, or severely depressed, 26.3% had a parent or guardian who is divorced or separated, and 14.2% lived with anyone who had a problem with alcohol or drugs (National Survey of Children’s Health, 2019-2020).

We move for children to inspire hope, restore well-being, build resiliency, support a sense of belonging and empower self-healing.

We move for our community.

We move to heal the mind, body and spirit.

We are focused on infusing dance, yoga and the performing arts into after school programs reaching kids that have experienced ACEs through the development and launch of our 8-week Healing Arts Program. We believe that we can’t heal what we can’t feel and when you begin feeling, you begin healing. In our program, 6-12 year olds will experience what it feels like to feel safe in their bodies through grounding techniques, movement and arts expression as we use a trauma-sensitive approach through the entire 8-weeks we spend with them.

So, how can you get involved? 2 ways!
