No Shame in Saving Energy!

Hello ener-G-savers,

Uli Nagel here, the Director of ener-G-save. I work mostly on our Cooler Communities school grant program. And I love the Lorax (see photo).

Before I started ener-G-save with our funder Harold Grinspoon, I was his Pilates instructor and I continue to see Pilates clients in my home studio.

One of my colleagues, I’ll call her Lyn, recently benefited from the Community Action weatherization program tailored towards people who live on lower incomes. She shares how the program significantly lowered her monthly heating bill in this video

It was such a good experience for Lyn, yet after we filmed the video about it, she told me she hesitated to let anyone know she took advantage of the free weatherization. “I don’t really feel poor and there is almost a stigma around these programs,” Lyn said.

But just like all of us served by public utilities, every time Lyn pays her bill, she pays into the fund that the utilities use to subsidize the weatherization of our homes.

I hope that all our readers take advantage of these programs, especially those who are eligible for fuel assistance and free weatherization.

In fact, you might be surprised, like I was, to learn that a two person household with an income below $64,977 can receive free insulation for their home if it is recommended by the energy auditor. A two person household with income below $48,856 can also receive new, efficient appliances for free if they have old, energy guzzling appliances. Click here to check if your household might be eligible.

No one should feel uncomfortable or guilty for using these programs. I hope more people use them so they can spend their hard-earned dollars on things that really matter to them rather than on high energy bills!

Thanks for reading. It’s been fun “chatting” with you.

‘til next time!
