ConnectED San Diego Update

“Through this JTB program my passion for the law has grown even more.” – Chloe L.

JTB University’s ConnectED San Diego took place in mid-July, with 46 students joining us! Surveys indicate that one of the things our students liked most was the opportunity to hear personally from our network of volunteer judges, law clerks, attorneys, and law students. The majority of our San Diego students also enjoyed learning to negotiate, and participating in breakout sessions that many said were engaging, detailed, and a great way to meet people. In addition, students learned about conflict resolution, paths to law school, the different types of law fields, business etiquette, financial literacy, the History of Asian Americans in the U.S. and AAPI Hate Crimes, and the ever-popular Journey to the Judiciary Judge Panel.

These learning experiences would not be possible if not for the support of our generous donors, sponsors, partners, and the San Diego Steering Committee. A special shout out to the week’s instructors: Lisa Maxwell, Shakur Collins, and Prof. Allen Snyder. Their commitment to our programming and to diversity in the legal field has enabled us to continue our critical work.

Meet Amanda Mehr, JTB’s 2021
PILI Fellow

JTB partners with the Public Interest Law Initiative to place a law student or recent law school graduate intern whenever we can. PILI’s mission is to cultivate a lifelong commitment to public interest law and pro bono service within the Illinois legal community to expand the availability of legal services for people, families and communities in need. This summer, Amanda Mehr has been lending a hand with our SJID Project Alumni Outreach and summer program development.

When asked what interested her about JTB, Amanda replied, “Before law school, I was a high school English teacher. I worked with students from a variety of backgrounds, but most would be the first in their families to go to college. Helping juniors and seniors figure out where they wanted to go to school and what course of study they would pursue was always one of my
favorite parts of my job. I also really enjoyed curriculum writing and felt like I could help with that at JTB.” About her internship goal, Amanda adds, “I want to have helped JTB in whatever way I can whether that's specific programming this summer or curriculum that can be used in the future.”

Amanda received her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law in May and sat for the Illinois State Bar in late July. She is looking forward to starting at a finance-focused law firm this fall.

Amanda, it's been great having you on Team JTB, and we wish you all the best!
