A message from the chair
Professor Paul Mitchell
As we say goodbye to 2020, we also say hello to 2021 and to the new, or rather, new normal. It’s been a tumultuous year of unpredictable changes, with effects felt across every aspect of cancer care in Victoria. For Victorian Tumour Summits, this meant that earlier in the year we postponed the planned face-to-face summits. As it became clear that COVID was going to be with us for some time yet, we moved to an online model, albeit with truncated planning intervals and a steep...SEE MORE
Project update
Victorian Tumour Summits
Three tumour summits are planned for 2021. The first summit for the breast tumour stream is aiming for June, with melanoma to follow in September or October.  A repeat pancreatic summit is planned for November or December.  Following the successful delivery of both a brain and repeat prostate summit as online events in 2020, we hope to see a return to in-person summits next year. The brain summit evaluation is now available via the link below.

Post-summit communications for the Prostate Cancer 2020 Summit will be distributed to attendees at the end of January and during the first half of February next year. The consumer videos screened at the online sessions are available via the link below.

Planning for the breast tumour summit is underway with the appointment of two co-chairs, Miss Jane Fox at Monash Health and Dr Belinda Yeo at Austin Health. An initial meeting with the DHHS data team will be held late this December. Potential clinical working group members will be invited to participate by the co-chairs with the first meeting to be held early in February.

Planning for the melanoma summit will recommence early in 2021 after it was deferred from 2020. This facilitated access to more current data, reflecting practice change over the past few year and the inclusion of primary health data.

A follow-up pancreatic summit to the 2017 summit will provide the opportunity to review progress and outcomes since this time and identify current unwarranted variations. Consumer challenges identified through comprehensive engagement with pancreatic cancer survivors will be central to the summit.
Learnings from this year
Various
Victorian Tumour Summits spoke with several organisations this year who were affected by restrictions and required alternatives to physical contact with consumers. Often, these changes had to be implemented very quickly. As 2021 approaches with continuing unknowns, here are some of the learnings from the previous months: Melanoma Institute Australia virtual event/Cancer Council Victoria Telehealth.
 Australian Lung Cancer Conference 2021
The 9th Australian Lung Cancer Conference 2021 (ALCC 2021) will be hosted in hybrid format. You can join online or attend one of three hubs – Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. The conference will be held in November to mark Lung Cancer Awareness Month and the Shine a Light on Lung Cancer campaign.
