Project update
Victorian Tumour Summits
Following consultation with the Victorian Tumour Summits Steering Committee and the Department of Health, the pancreatic and melanoma summits planned for the end of this year have been postponed to the first half of 2022. Many clinicians and allied health team members are currently working hard to assist with the health services response to the current COVID-19 outbreak in Victoria. They are projected to be occupied with this important responsibility into the new year. It is anticipated that the pancreatic summit will be held in early March. New dates for the summits will be announced at the start of next year via email and this newsletter. The VTS project thanks all clinicians and consumers for their contributions to the pancreatic and melanoma summits so far. The VTS team is continuing the development of summit content with clinicians and consumers for presentation at the optimal time.
Breast Cancer 2021 Summit patient lead update
Debbie Neilsen
We’re sad to say our wonderful breast cancer patient representative, Debbie Neilsen, died from metastatic breast cancer on Monday 27 September. Debbie filmed the Breast Cancer 2021 Summit patient recommendations video on 30 June with Tanya Smith. This was a difficult time for her, due to being informed between filming and the Summit that the disease had progressed. As the patient representative co-lead, Debbie contributed immensely to raising awareness at the Summit on the invisibility of metastatic breast cancer patients, of whom 3,000 die per year in Australia. We would like to recognise her valour in participating at the Summit while managing her prognosis, and her generosity in giving her valuable time to working to improve cancer care for other patients in the future. Debbie held a 'living wake' before her death to celebrate her life and relationships with her loved ones, and our thoughts are with her family and friends.
