COVID-19 Update

The Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton (CCASH) is committed to the health and wellbeing of its staff, partners, children, youth and families that we serve and are taking precautions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

In response to the current state of emergency lockdown, the Province of Ontario has identified children’s aid societies as an essential service.  We are continuing to deliver services but in order to maintain social distancing we are limiting access to our building. During this period, the CCASH will continue to provide in person services including facilitating parent/child contact during access visits.  Staff are working remotely during this time and are accessible via phone and email. If you have a concern about the safety or well-being of a child or youth or if your family is in need of support, please call 905-525-2012 or our French Services Line at 1-855-550-3571. After-hours at 905-522-8053.

We hope that everyone is staying healthy as we continue to see an increase in COVID-19 cases in our community. Let us work together to do our part to stop the spread.

Power Up! Symposium

On Wednesday, February 24, 2021 the One Vision One Voice program will present the second edition of PowerUp!, a symposium for Black/African Canadian youth. PowerUp! is the first Canadian event specifically designed for Black youth in care, and this time we’re going virtual to connect, empower, and inspire unity and togetherness amongst Black youth across Ontario in the child welfare system.

Kinship Testimonial

We have all heard grandparents talk about how much they enjoy time with their grandchildren, and how they need a nap once they’re gone. How do you muster up the energy to care for your grandchildren full-time when many people your age are talking about retirement and the quiet life? Carol is in her 50s, and questioned if she would have the energy to keep up with her infant grandson after her daughter passed away.

For Carol, there was no question about whether she would take on the responsibility of parenting Damian. She wanted him to grow up in his birth family (which is very large) and to remain central to their lives. Of course, Carol has found the personal resources needed to be a great parent to Damian. She gets immense satisfaction from her relationship with him, and from knowing that she has done what she knows is best for him. She wouldn’t hesitate to advise anyone in a similar situation to make the same decision. Her recommendations?
  • Create a support structure within your network of friends and family.
  • Utilize all the resources that are available to you.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Carol has found that the Kinship Support staff at CCAS have been very supportive. It is one of our strategic priorities to seek kinship care for children in need. Studies show that children who are cared for by kin – defined as people who are known to the child, not just family members – are more likely to thrive.
We’re so delighted that Carol and Damian are together, and grateful to Carol for providing a loving home for a child in need.
