01 April 2022

Dear Avila Community,

It has been another busy and vibrant week of learning and activity at Avila as we draw closer to the end of term for students next Thursday. Our senior students have been diligently studying for their SAC's, Faith and Mission leaders have been fundraising for Project Compassion, the House Sports Carnival at Jells Park and SCSA Swimming Meet at MSAC showcased sporting prowess and rehearsals for the Creative Arts Festival and our joint schools musical, Shrek, with Mazenod are well underway.

It has been delightful to witness the enthusiastic support of students for each other in all dimensions of school life. Young people cheering on each other in a true spirit of community.

Our Year 9 students have created a stunning array of artistic representations of the Stations of the Cross. These are displayed around our school campus and invite each of us to walk the Way of the Cross, reflecting on our own Lenten journey and to take the time to pray for ourselves and others.

The Gospel this Sunday has Jesus pose the question, "If there is one of you who has not sinned let him throw the first stone". And so as we move slowly towards Holy Week we take the time to pause, reflect, repent and reach out in love.

This Easter may the blessings of this sacred season surround you and your family and the promise of new life that is the Resurrection fill you with hope.

Wishing our community all the Blessings of Easter.

Faith & Mission

Prayer

Loving Lord,
it's so hard to love the world sometimes and to love it the way Jesus did seems impossible.

Help us to be inspired by his love and guided by his example.

Help us to accept that we can't do it alone,

Give us support in this journey.

Show us how to unlock our heart so that we too can be co-creators in the world awaiting your promise to be fulfilled with great hope in our heart and your praise on our lips.

With confidence we pray.

Amen

Learning and Teaching

Text and Traditions

On Thursday, the Year 10 Texts and Traditions class visited the Jewish Museum of Australia in St Kilda. We were greeted by the lovely tour guides Charlotte, Jenny and Hilda who took us to a synagogue. There we learned about services that take place in the synagogue and rules that they have.

It was interesting to discover the similarities and differences between Catholic and Jewish cultures! In the museum we learned more about the history of Judaism. Finally, we were able to participate in a mock Shabbat ritual. Our visit was an insightful experience that has truly benefited our learning and understanding of other religions and cultures.

SCSA Swimming Meet

After many 6:45am starts and countless muesli bars, Avila travelled to MSAC on Thursday 24 March to compete in the SCSA Swimming and Diving Competition. This competition is an annual event that many of our swimmers and divers look forward to. We are glad to report that we came 7th for swimming and 5th for Diving!

Throughout the night, we had many successful results including our own Madeline Horvath breaking the Year 10 50m Breaststroke for the third year running! How hard the girls tried really showed in their times and individual places they came. The girls showed a tremendous amount of team spirit, cheering for the other girls and supporting them all the way to the last race.

We would like to express our deepest thanks to Mrs Hume for always encouraging us, Ms Campigli for being a calm presence amongst the team and Nat, our amazing swim coach for all her hard work, dedication and passion towards this swim squad. Also to Ms King for continuously bringing her bubbly and outgoing attitude to the early morning dive training, helping us stay motivated at 6:45am in the morning!

Co-Curricular

Quill and Ink

Quill and Ink writers were treated to another presentation with a focus on encountering writing experiences here at Avila. Amy Dickson explored all the writing experiences available at the College, highlighting the benefits and rewards of writing for a varied audience. Enhancing the group's enthusiasm, Amy's confidence in highlighting the accessibility of these allowed Quill and Ink students to enjoy the wonderful journey of opportunities that await them.
