Avila College News

Dear Avila Community,

Today we returned to remote learning and teaching. We know we prefer to be onsite and together, but health and safety come first. Thanks to all students and staff, you have shown your capacity to adapt and you continue to do a great job. There is much support in place here at Avila with teachers and support staff specialists, online resources, peers and student leaders. The Avila family is here, strong in our commitment to each other and to our community, even when we are remote. I encourage students and parents to reach out if and when you need support.

Keep warm and well, wear a mask, wash your hands, stay local, take care.

Faith & Mission

Weekly Prayer

God of all creation, as we journey together in this Great Southern Land, We pray for healing, forgiveness, and unity, Creating a path of good will, with justice and compassion. Jesus, through the power of your love, You have given us the courage, wisdom, and strength To share our gifts and talents in humility. In peace and understanding we reconcile with each other. Creator Spirit, we come together in prayer and thanksgiving For the many blessings we have received. Allow your Spirit to wash over us and give us strength to walk together as one.

Vinnies Sleepout Update

The Vinnies Sleepout has been re-scheduled for Friday 27 August. Current COVID lockdown restrictions on numbers may see this date or event change. We will keep all students who have previously signed up informed once a decision has been made.

Construction Update

Ballygriffin Senior Learning Centre

Over the holidays, great progress has been made on the site of our new Ballygriffin Senior Learning Centre.  The site is now completely cordoned off and in the hands of our builders, and despite some tricky weather, demolition of the Year 11 building and both residential houses at 33 & 31 Charles St is now complete.

Next steps include engaging student voice for input into our interior design with our student learning captains to identify the furniture that will best support learning across the various spaces inside Ballygriffin.

Stay tuned for footage from our time lapse camera, which will provide video progress updates every term. You'll find more information and photos on our Avila website as we move through this exciting stage of the execution of our College Master Plan.

Work Experience

Diverse work choices

Maya Reef | Yr10
In the last week of the holidays, I completed a week of work experience hosted by Monash University. There I mainly worked in the Biomedicine and Pharmacology labs with third year and PhD Biomedicine students. Working with the students staining cell samples and analysing them while understanding fibrosis was a great experience.
The most interesting thing I got to see was induced stroke surgery on mice that PhD students were working on to try and find a better and more reliable medicine and stop early stages of stroke. Overall it was an amazing week full of so many learning opportunities that I was so grateful to have participated in.
Gemma Stange | Yr12
In recent weeks I’ve been fortunate enough to undergo work experience at Melbourne Zoo, gaining a Zookeepers insider's view into an amazing world of animal care and conservation. I was able to participate in  some of the Zoo's daily tasks such as feeding, training and health checks and was taught valuable lessons as to how humans impact the livelihoods of all animals across the globe. The placement assured my ambition to work in wildlife conservation and it was an experience I won’t ever forget.

Drop-off & Pick-up

We ask parents to be aware that construction on the Ballygriffin project requires access to the site for large construction vehicles throughout the day.
If you are dropping-off or picking-up your daughter we suggest this is done in the surrounding streets of Charles and St Albans (as shown on the map below).
We thank you for your patience whilst we upgrade this region of the school.

Community Annoucements
