Avila College News

Dear Avila Community

There are many things for all of us to be thankful for. Hopefully this afternoon in our ‘Take 5 - Have a Breather” Period 4 session, some of these will pass through our thoughts as we enjoy some down time. My thanks go out to the various students, parents and staff who have sent me a short message acknowledging something that they have appreciated or enjoyed or been grateful for. Little shout outs, are in my experience, worth their weight in gold.

Yesterday was the United Nations World Humanitarian Day. There couldn’t be a more important day and more apt timing for such a recognition. The UN website offers this challenge to those who can participate: #JointheHumanRace: Run, ride, swim, walk or do any activity of your choice for a cumulative 100 minutes between August 16 and August 31 in solidarity with vulnerable people, and to tell world leaders that they expect developed countries to deliver on their pledge for climate mitigation and adaptation in developing countries. If you don’t wish to take part physically you can add your voice.

Want to block out the world for an hour? If you are inclined to pick up your headphones you might like to listen to a podcast I discovered: Bounce Back - Episode 13: Ben Crowe (Ash Barty’s Mindset Coach). It’s interesting, it made me reflect and it motivated me to recommit to a morning walk each day. Maybe it will be of interest to you?

Stay safe and Take 5,

Dr Michelle Cotter | Principal

Faith & Mission

Weekly Prayer

Slow me down, Lord!
Quieten my mind and steady my harried pace.

Give me the calmness of the everlasting hills and break the tension of my nerves with the soothing music of the singing streams.

Teach me the art of taking time out, to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to watch a spider build a web or to read a few chapters from a good book.

Remind me that the race is not always won by the swift, that there is more to life than increasing its speed.

Slow me down, Lord and inspire me to stop...breathe...and be present in this moment.
