Avila College News

Dear Avila Community

It's been another exciting and busy week at Avila. Amongst the many and varied lunch time and after school activities there have been students recognising Closing the Gap, Harmony Week and standing up against Bullying.

I've continued Cookies and a Chat with Year 7's and learnt even more about their favourite thing about Avila so far...Junior Drama Club, REC Group, the Library at lunch time, Science, Maths, the Cafe, homeroom, Peer Helpers...and the list continues...eating Cookies with Dr Cotter got a mention too!

Best wishes for a restful weekend to all. As we wear orange and green today for the National Day of Action Against Bullying I am very proud of our Peer Helpers and Wellbeing leaders who continue to find ways to further enhance our learning community.

Happy Learning!

Highlight of the Week

This Thursday the Avila Community celebrated Close the Gap Day. The Close the Gap campaign aims to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and is a highly regarded movement that has shaped government policy.

To acknowledge the Day, Avila girls joined together in St Teresa’s garden for some Indigenous face painting, nail painting, temporary tattoos and not to mention some very important petition signing that will help Indigenous Australians health and wellcare getting closer to closing the gap!

This week we also celebrated Harmony week which is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community.

Avila acknowledged Bulling No Way! which aims to raise awareness of bullying of children and young people, in schools and elsewhere, and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it.

On Friday, we had a casual clothes day where girls wore blue, green or orange which are the respective colours for these organisations and in the stand against bullying. Through this girls brought a gold coin donation to which all the money went to Caritas, helping Avila reach our goal of $6000. Thank you to all the girls that donated. We really appreciate it! Keep up the great work.

Cricket Champions!

This week we had a junior, intermediate and senior team participate in the inter-school Indoor cricket tournament held at Boxhill indoor center. This has been the culmination of many weeks of hard work from all involved and I’d like to thank all the students who participated with great energy and excellent sportsmanship throughout selection, training and the tournament itself.

Our Junior team had an extremely successful day winning their age group. They played 3 rounds winning all of their games and then qualified for finals taking out the grand final win with a score of (not sure). A special mention and congratulations to Jessica Hoogeveen and Stephanie Wales for being selected as Most Valuable Players of their matches.

The Intermediates also had a good day but unfortunately missed out on finals after only getting one win in the early rounds but still put in an amazing amount of effort and were very supportive of the other teams. In their final game for 3rd and 4th they took the win with a score of (not sure). The seniors also had a very successful day winning their grand final against Marter Christie. They had only won 2 out of the 3 games losing the first game by a mere run, but still managed to make the finals. It all came together for them in the final keeping the opposition to only 29 runs.

Overall it was a very successful day for Avila, coming away with wins in 2 of the 3 sections and everyone having participated with such great spirit. Thank you Mr Pulvirenti (Juniors), Ms Bauman (Intermediates) and Mr Roberts (Seniors) for giving up time each week to help each team train and reach their potential on the day.

Students will receive the results of the quiz in an interview with a Careers Teacher in Term 2 and will then be able to share the results with others.
