Dear Avila Community

This week the rhythm of 'normal' routine has swung back into daily school life and could be well and truly enjoyed. From 'good mornings with sanitiser at the front gate' to the line at the cafe for a treat at recess, there is a buzz in the air. Our days are energised with classroom learning, hands on investigations, problem solving and creative explorations. Students across all year levels are doing an awesome job at adapting to the activity and interaction of learning together and being a connected community.

We marked Remembrance Day this week, on the 11th Day at the 11th Hour. It's always a somber time when we recall the sacrifices made by those who have come before us and fallen in war. We also remember all those who have returned from armed conflicts and those families and friends who support them, even to this day. Thank you to the Year 11 VCAL students and Wellbeing leaders who led the whole school community in our Remembrance Service.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning we shall remember them. Lest We Forget.

In the coming weeks we are preparing for a number of our usual end of school year milestones. Once again we are adapting these to the current conditions. Keep an eye out for the newsletter for links to these special events. We are prioritising our students being able to celebrate together at school, recording as many as possible and sharing with families electronically so you can watch at a time that best fits with family life.

Remembrance Day 2021

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front after the bloodshed of World War I. Over the past century, this moment has been adopted across the globe as a time to remember those who served and sacrificed in all wars and conflicts.

This Remembrance Day, all Australians are called to "Remember to Remember" –  to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve our country today.

We remember today, O Lord all those who have died in any kind of war. Help us to work for a better understanding between races and nations. Grant O Lord for the sake of those whose lives were lost in war, and for the sake of the generations to come, that the nations of the work may learn your way of peace.

Big Ideas in Computer Technology


Year 10 student Danielle Weyermayr shares her experiences in the Big Ideas in Computer Technology class.
 

My final project for Year 10 Big Ideas is a project about steganography, the practice of hiding a secret message in something that isn't a secret. I created a program that would hide a secret message in a picture, and another one that would decode the message.

I used Python, a computer programming language, to manipulate the pixels in an image so they would hide the message in the black and white value of the pixels.

You can see the images below look identical, but the second image has a secret message hidden in its pixels, that can be decoded using the decoding program.

Year 9 students tested PH levels.


Year 7 students worked through the art process studying landscape.
Year 10 Design Tech students completed their hoodies.
Year 8 students undertook a dissection prac in the science lab.
Using measurement, speed and energy calculations together with electrical circuits and engineering design principles, Year 9 students designed and flew their planes. 
VET Hospitality students made chocolate strawberry roulades.

Library

New Maker Space

The Avila College Library has introduced a number of new Lego packs to create a Maker Space, available to all students during recess and lunchtimes. There are many different creatures, vehicles and other constructions to make and design for our Lego Masters!

2022 Book Lists

The Resource List for Years 7-9 for 2022 is now available for order from Lilydale Books.

  • Parents can select contactless Click & Collect or Home Delivery.
  • All orders placed before December 12 that exceed $200 per student will receive free postage.

COVID SAFE GUIDELINES

Due to COVID-19 and the unpredictable nature of restrictions, Lilydale Books encourages customers to place orders online for home delivery as the preferred option. In-store shopping may be unavailable at short notice. Reduced store capacity may result in longer than usual wait times. Please note that the store will have strict health and safety guidelines in place.

Secondhand Uniform Shop


The secondhand uniform shop is now open. Please see below for opening dates and times.

Please Note: As per MACS (Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools) policy, only fully vaccinated customers can enter the shop and will be required to check in with the QR Code, produce evidence of their vaccination certificate and adhere to the 4sqm density limits.

(Year 9 - 11 Students Only) Lunchtime Sale 

A lunchtime sale of new, discontinued Avila uniform items will be held in the Gym on Tuesday 16, Wednesday 17, Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 November. 

These discontinued items can only be worn by Year 9 - 11 through to end of 2023 after which point the updated designs must be worn. Items on sale include the fleece vest, tracksuit pants and tracksuit top.

Music

2022 Private Music Lessons

Enrolments for Instrumental and Singing Lessons in 2022 are now open.
Apply before Friday 19 November to secure your place.

The private Instrumental/Singing program at Avila College offers students:

  • The ability to individually pursue their own choice of instrument.
  • Personalised and customised music learning beyond the general classroom.
  • First-class specialist instrumental teachers, with the expertise of many years of teaching and performing.
  • The opportunity to be part of the many instrumental ensembles and choirs at Avila.
  • Preparation for a music career.

Many studies show a correlation between musical training and academic success, in both children and adults. Learning to play an instrument stimulates the brain, improving functions like memory and abstract reasoning skills, which are essential for maths and science.

The IndOz Parenting Group is running a Career Insight series for secondary schools. Episode 1 focuses on the health and medical industry and features our very own Avila Alumnae Jessica Satya Graha as a guest presenter on the panel.
