Dear Avila Community,

This week we embarked on our Lenten journey together in our Ash Wednesday services during Homeroom. Lent is an important season of the Church year. Lent invites us to pause, to reflect and to consider how we can participate in almsgiving to better our community. Lent is a time for reflection and prayer. For many of us, the people of Ukraine are currently held firmly in our hearts and prayers as we pray for peace and compassion in our world.

(Lunch with the Avila Co-Captains together with Anna Marvelli, Director of Wellbeing and Clare Manning, Year 12 Co-ordinator)

It is also a time when we can place our good intentions into action and make a meaningful contribution to help others. As a school community we embrace the opportunity to do this through Project Compassion. Throughout the Lenten period, our Faith and Mission leaders have planned a number of fundraising activities to support our Project Compassion pledge to make a difference to a better world now and for all future generations.

You too can support our pledge via the Avila Project Compassion website:

Together, let us pray for peace and the people of Ukraine.

Our Lenten Journey

God's Grace

On Wednesday our community marked the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday services in homeroom. Lent is traditionally a time of us preparing for Easter through fasting, alms giving and prayer. We find ourselves in particularly turbulent times with floods in Australia, a worsening war in Ukraine, managing the consequences of a global pandemic and dealing with our own complicated and sometimes broken lives.

Julianne Stanz, in her book Braving the Thin Places: Celtic Wisdom to Create a Space for Grace, invites us to explore our own experiences of brokenness as 'thin places’ – moments when God’s grace is accessible to us. Stanz says “We are all broken in some way. But those of us who embrace our brokenness will be transformed”. It is this transformation that the season of Lent seeks to facilitate.

Project Compassion

The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is ‘For All Future Generations’ and reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues.

Support of the fundraising is an opportunity for us to be people of “Deeds not words” as we play a part in the transformation of lives.

Waverley Blues Football Clinic

On Thursday 3 March during our Junior Dragons Sport Club we were lucky enough to have a visit from the Waverley Blues Football Club. They ran an AFL clinic for any interested students and there was lots of laughter, smiles and enjoyment.

Avila Vice Sports Captain, Abbey Cerovac plays for the Waverley Blues and shared some thoughts on why she loves it:

"I love playing footy at Waverley Blues because of the camaraderie and passion within the teams which extends to the whole club community as well as the dedicated coaches that make training and game days so enjoyable."

The Waverley Blues Football Club connected with Avila and offered the use of their facilities for our training. This has allowed our AFL program to increase in size and quality as a result.

If anyone is interested in playing or attending a trial training session then please see the flyer in the Community Notices below. No experience is necessary.
