Avila College News

Dear Avila Community

This week has been action packed. For the first time in a year, our sports teams have been able to compete again with the relaunch of the SCSA tournaments. Congratulations to the Avila Tennis Squad who performed so well on the courts and enjoyed the chance to once again, represent our school so proudly.

Our Year 7 students have also enjoyed their very first Avila camp experience and the chance to get to know each other, make new friends and come together as a cohort. It has been wonderful to see them embrace new skills - like rock climbing, camping under the stars and canoeing - with such enthusiasm and support for one another. While there will be some tired heads hitting the pillows tonight, there will also be some full hearts brimming with the first of many significant memories, bonds and experiences in their journey as Avila girls.

Happy Learning!

In his message for Lent 2021, Pope Francis asks people to experience Lent with Love. To experience Lent with love means caring for those who suffer or feel abandoned and fearful. Love is a gift that gives meaning to our lives.  It enables us to view those in need as members of our own family, as friends, brothers or sisters.  A small amount, if given with love never ends, but becomes a source of life and happiness.

Faith & Mission

Weekly Prayer

Good and loving God, source of every grace and blessing,
As we gather during this Lenten period, we place ourselves before you,
For you are filled with beauty and light and you care deeply for each one of us.
Help us to listen before speaking.
Help us to respect and understand the opinions of others.
Help us to trust one another and share with openness and vulnerability.
May your light enfold us.
May your Spirit guide us.
May your grace abound in us.
We make this prayer through
Christ Our Lord, Amen

Tennis Champions!

Thursday marked the first SCSA tournament post-COVID, with the Avila Tennis team making their way to the Boroondara Sports Complex to commence a highly anticipated return to interschool sports.

We were blessed with perfect weather, lifting our spirits even further. As the first round began, everyone was on top of their game with aces being served by Rachelle and Julia among others. The first round also included the beginning of our junior singles player Sophia’s undefeated streak of wins, and placing her with the Player of the Tournament award.

Throughout the day the Avila girls played extremely well, with multiple matches being won 6-0, resulting in all three teams, Junior, Intermediate and Seniors proceeding through to the semi finals.

Our Seniors played multiple amazing points, Avindri always giving her full power with each point, and Miah and Emily winning their doubles.

All the girls showed great teamwork with our Intermediates performing incredibly well in their semis. Maya and Diyara played beautiful shots in their doubles and Emma smashing her singles opponent 6-1, and being awarded with the Player of the Tournament award.

Tough competition was placed on all teams, however they were no match for the skilled players in the Junior and Intermediates who proceeded to the Grand Final. And an incredible final result for both teams as they scored 1st place overall.

Congratulations and well done to all of the girls in the Tennis team. After a tiring 7 rounds of matches everyone walked out with smiles on their faces and showed the true spirit of Avila.

Parent-Student-Teacher Conversations

All parents/carers and students are encouraged to participate in Parent-Student-Teacher conversations for Semester 1. It is a great opportunity to discuss student goals for 2021 and students next steps for learning.

Scheduling for 2021 has taken into consideration the need to maintain COVID-19 safe density limits and the feedback from our community about the virtual conversations held in 2020. For Semester 1 the opportunity to be onsite has been prioritised for VCE Unit 3 and 4 and Senior VCAL students. Students and parents/carers will also be able to access Careers Practitioners for drop in interviews while onsite.

  • Face-to-face meetings onsite for only VCE Unit 3 and 4 students and Senior VCAL students on Thursday 25 March 3.30-8.30pm. Bookings will open Wednesday 17 March and close 6pm on Wednesday 24 March.
