Public Speaking & Debating

Award Season

Congratulations to Year 10 student Amy Dickson who received the Swannie Award, D Grade, Debaters Association of Victoria 2021.

The DAV Swannie Award celebrates the debater with the highest average speaker score in their grade in the state, after completing at least three debates during the year.  Amy performed at a very high level across her debating performances in the inter-school competition last year, with adjudicators commending her accomplished mastery of matter and method, and her polished manner in her presentation.

Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Avila Oratory Competition. Held during lunchtimes across term one, students were required to respond to a range of prompts and present a speech to their peers. The adjudicators, Elizabeth Dinh and Sophie Marinis (Public Speaking and Debating Captains) looked at the way our students responded to the prompt, their engagement with the audience, and their control of their subject matter.  All of our participating students performed with great skill, regaling the audience with their wide range of approaches, from entertaining anecdotes and exploration of grand ideas, to persuasive speeches on the urgent need for equality in our society.  We thank all students for their participation, and those who attended as audience members too.
