Community Connections

Congratulations to all our students, staff and audiences involved in the Creative Arts Spectacular. It was a great community event and wonderful to host such an interactive performance in our very own Bunjil.

This week we also conducted the final series of our Parent-Student-Teacher Conversations for the semester. It is great to see so many parents and students embrace the opportunity to touch base, engage in meaningful discussions with teachers and get involved as a school-home partnership in monitoring progress, highlighting achievements and identifying strategies for further development together. The flexibility of video conferencing platforms has hopefully made it easier to schedule and attend these vital conversations.

Yesterday our Year 10 Peer Helpers hosted Grade 5 students for a Secondary School Experience Day. The younger students had the opportunity to learn in the science labs, get creative in the art rooms, discover the AgHort Garden while also being treated to a performing arts showcase and co-curricular expo. Designed to demystify secondary school, it also allowed us all to see Avila through their eyes and once again be reminded and amazed by the depth and breadth of learning experiences available each and every day at Avila. Thank you to our Peer Helpers, student leaders and performers who made the day so special, engaging and welcoming for our young visitors.
The colour purple continues to dominate our Year 12 cuppa and a chat as we catch up with our Class of 2021 and hear about how their final year is progressing and their plans for the future.

Happy learning!

Faith & Mission

Weekly Prayer

O God of life and love and peace,

We witness the violence and injustice in your Holy Land

And our hearts break.

We pray -

That weapons of war be laid down

That walls of separation and the machinery of occupation be dismantled

That prisoners be released

That demonising of “the other” cease

That political leaders seek the good of all people in Palestine and Israel.

We pray also for ourselves -

That our eyes will be opened to the ways in which our beliefs and actions have contributed to injustice and to violence.

O God, whose heart breaks for the world,

May your justice dwell in the land

May your righteousness abide in fruitful fields

May the effect of righteousness be quietness and trust forever

May the effect of justice be peace - enduring peace.

HighLight of the Week

This week the Year 12 captains set up stalls for an expo in the Hall showcasing their respective portfolios. From Junior Drama Club to Music, student leaders shared their expertise and experience of all things Avila with our Grade 5 visitors.

The captains loved being able to share their experiences and passion for college life and individual subjects. Likewise, the Grade 5 students had a blast touring our school, familiarising themselves with our Avila culture.

VCAL | Exploring Local Issues

During Term 1, the Year 12 VCAL class explored the issues of food insecurity and wastage. They created cook books including recipes that repurposed often wasted food items. A morning tea was held where many of these delicious treats were served. On Monday the students visited Fareshare, a food repurposing community service, and worked with other volunteers using food items donated that would otherwise have been landfill. They followed this with a visit to Frontyard Youth Services which supports homeless youth in Melbourne.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with a Disability.

Schools must now complete the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) every year. It counts the number of students who receive additional adjustments or “help” at school because of a disability. The NCCD helps governments plan for the needs of students with disability.
