Ecumenical News
The Presbytery of Chicago (POC, PCUSA) called a special meeting on January 31 2023. The meeting was hosted on Zoom, with 145 attendees presence. The special meeting was led by the new Moderator, Rev. Barbara Gorsky. The purpose of this special meeting is to vote on 33 Amendments to the Book of Order, proposed by the 225th General Synod and officers nominated by the nomination committee. The delegates discussed each amendment. Except for 22-O, 22-P, 22-E, and 22-CC, most of the 29 amendments were approved by the majority of the voting delegates. These amendments reflect on the awareness of gender identity and inclusion (non-binary gender expression, broader understanding of parenthood, ability, and ethnicity), and the adoption of electronic session meetings (not only in-person meeting counts). Sexual harassment training, boundary training, and racial justice training are about to be included in the Book of Order as mandatory items; ruling elders (such as our Church Council members) and ministers will have to receive those training certified by the presbytery at least every 36 months. Each council (such as our Church Council) need to adopt background check and youth/child protection training protocols if the personnel relates to the children and youth ministry. Amendment 22-I also asks to provide a minimum of 12 weeks of paid family leave in terms of calls for installed pastors and associate pastors. This amendment will overrule POC's eight weeks code passed last month. Amendment 22-S also clarifies "Trust and Confidentiality" in pastoral care settings "Confidentiality should not be an excuse to hold secret the knowledge or risk of harm, especially when related to the physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse of a minor or an adult who lacks mental capacity." It will apply to ordained ministers and ruling elders (such as Church Council members). Amendment 22-GG will seek to replace the current "Rules of Discipline" with a new "Church Discipline" section (ROD-03) in the Book of Order. These amendments are in the constitutional level and require more than half of the presbytery's approval by the end of June.
The next POC General Assembly will be on February 28 at 4 pm on Zoom.
You can read the full 33 proposed amendments here, in PDF file (click the link).

UCC leaders lament death of Tyre Nichols with release of fatal police beating video (January 27 2023)
People of faith must lift their voices in anger, in outrage, and in grief over this tragic killing. Our lament will continue until every mother’s child knows they can walk the streets without worrying that those mandated with protecting us are the danger we fear or face.
In memory of Tyre Nichols, and in solidarity with his mother, his family, his loved ones, and with the collective voice of all who feel this deep pain we offer our own lament.
God whose image every child bears, hear us as we cry out in grief over the tragic loss of our brother Tyre......Full Statement (click the link).

Notes from the Congregational Conversation Part One
and the Appeal For The Children Community Fund Campaign
Dear Congregation:
We began a conversation on Sunday (see notes below). We hope to continue on Sunday, January 8, 2023. We need your help. Please use templates to mail to family, friends, community and business members. Help us get Little People Day Care pen by improving our building. We appreciate and love each of you. Pastor Charlene Hill & UCHP Council
Appeal For The Children Community Fund Campaign: Below is a mission close to my heart. As a member of the United Church of Hyde Park, I am looking for your advice and support to complete our goal of bringing needed childcare services to our community. Can you please spread the word to your friends and family during these closing weeks of the year. Thank you for your help! See you in the New Year! The United Church of Hyde Park and Little People Learning have been working to bring a daycare facility to the Hyde Park neighborhood over the last 18 months. We are close to our goal to open early in 2023. The funding for the project is almost complete. Please help us finish the job (Note from Nevin Hedlund)!
Why are we at UCHP doing all this work? Because this expresses our mission. We are a church located in the heart of the city, on our way together, doing our best to serve one another and our neighborhood. Our neighborhood needs more pre-school centers for young children. We have a building which we view as a resource for ministry, therefore we can help. So we are upgrading our building for early childhood education. We have invested heavily to make our building much safer.  We have met new fire code and other standards. We have upgraded our heating system, many classrooms, and prepared this old building for a new ministry. We have done all this because we are followers of Jesus, the only great religious leader who made a place for children among his followers (note from Rev. Paul Dietterich).
