SciFly NYC // 94 // Speculating Queer Futures with Malka Older

Weekly Events 9/16 - 9/22

Hey SciFly Readers!

This week I want to shout-out an amazing event happening on Thursday, hosted one of my favorite people, Danya Glabau as part of her QX Meetup.

I have been to several of the QX Meetups now, and they always provide fun and provocative speakers (a hard combo), as well as great connections to new friends, like-minded artists, designers, scientists, academics and more.

This week, one of my favorite science fiction authors, Malka Older, will be stopping by NYC to talk about how technology and design become part of queer lives.

I 100% encourage you to attend and I will absolutely be there!

Also, fun fact, Malka's book Infomocracy will be the first read of the new SFReads monthly book club, to kick off our track on Big Data, Surveillance, Identity & Governance in Physical/Digital Realities. I spoke with her briefly on Twitter, and there is a good chance she will join us remotely to discuss it, so come out now and meet her in person / pick up a signed copy of her book!!!

If you want to join SFReads, the sign-up list theoretically closed last night, but i'll keep it open a teeny bit longer if you want to sign up after reading this!

In their first 5 events, QX convened conversations about the histories and presents of how technology and design become part of queer lives. But what about the future?

In their first event about queer futures, science fiction writer Malka Older joins the group to talk about the people, politics, and technologies that drive the action in her Hugo Award-nominated series, The Centenal Cycle, and her new collection, ...and Other Disasters, out in November. In her imaginative future Earth with no borders or countries as we know them today, information flows rapidly, eliminating some of society’s problems but creating new ones.
  • What does a future world where queer inclusion is fundamental look like?
  • What unexpected problems will new technologies trigger in the future?
  • Wwhat can “we” in society learn for life in the present from sci fi futures?
The Meetup will start with a reading by Malka  at 6pm, followed by a conversation with the audience and, as always, time to mingle and meet new friends. This event is generously supported by Google. Donations accepted on site to support their guest.

They'll also have copies of Malka’s latest books for sale - or you bring yours for her to sign!

Thanks for listening and read on for this week's great speculative events!
