Council Updates
OCTOBER  2021

Greetings Unity family,

This month’s Council newsletter begins by following up on the message I sent out last week regarding Pastor Jeff's two-week leave of absence and yesterday's cancelled worship service.

I have some good news.  Thanks to the hard work of the Worship Life team, and others, we will be having a "regular" hybrid church service this Sunday, October 31 -- both in-person and online via Zoom.

Leah Steiner will lead the service and Rev. Dr. Nancy Cocks will deliver the sermon.

I know some of you have reached out to ask how Pastor Jeff is doing.  I haven't spoken with him in a few days, and I don't have any news to relay.  Even so... thank you for your concern, and especially your prayers.

Here are a couple of quick updates from Don Zimmer and our Property Team.

1. Person-Lift
Funds were approved by council to repair the lift using money from the Social Committee [thank you!].

Medicine Hat Elevators has completed some of the work, with the
remainder to be completed in the near future now that the parts have been received.  Once all complete, they will then sign off the deficiencies and request the AEDARSA inspection on our behalf.

2. Stained-glass Window Panels
The Stained-glass window panels from Grace Lutheran which have been sitting in storage for years were recently put on the open marketplace (on Kijiji) by recommendation of council.

An offer of $850.00 was received on October 15 for panels #1, 6, 8 and 15 (together).

The offer was put in front of council as a motion and was unanimously approved.

At our most recent Council Meeting, we approved the Minutes of the previous Meeting (September 22, 2021) with a couple of minor amendments.
[Unfortunately, I do not recall the specifics of the amendments at this time.]

You can access the Minutes here:

Budget update:

Chequing =  -$4,989 (i.e. into our line of credit)
Mortgage = $43,173

BUDGETED MONTHLY GIVING  =  $ 8600

ACTUAL MONTHLY GIVING TO THE BUDGET
January  =  $ 7965
February  =  $ 8605
March  =  $ 8525
April  =  $ 8075
May  =  $ 9675
June  =  $ 7288
July  =  $ 8375

August  =  $ 5700
September  =  $ 7980

BUDGETED GOAL AFTER 8 MONTHS  =  $ 77400
GIVING TO THE BUDGET AFTER 8 MONTHS  =  $ 72188
DIFFERENCE  =  $ -5212
AVERAGE MONTHLY DIFFERENCE  =  $ -579
Continuing on the topic of the budget, I have a couple of brief notes.
  1. Unfortunately, we are dipping well into line of credit.  This is due to a combination of budgeted expenses and a few unexpected expenses, such as the Person-Lift and the Fire Panel.
  2. Crystal did recently uncover some good news.  We are eligible for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy.  We have already been approved for a $3500 subsidy, which should arrive within the next week.  Crystal has applied for further subsidies, but their approval is still pending.
I'll be honest with you... I'm inordinately excited about this update.

The Social Team is planning to host a Bake Sale (similar to last year's tremendously successful Cookie Sale) very soon!

Be thinking about what you might wish to contribute to the sale - either baked goods or volunteering your time.

How handy that it falls just in time for Christmas, eh?
That's all I have for now.

As always, if you have a suggestion or inquiry regarding Unity Council, or any of the topics discussed in this Newsletter, it would be great to hear from you.

Thank you for your support and prayers, from the bottom of my heart.

Wishing you all a terrific month,
