Hello CCA Members!

Each issue of the newsletter will highlight our members' work and achievements,  share information about our upcoming conference and conference team, provide helpful research tips or reminders, and more! In another effort to keep us connected, make sure you are following all of our social media, as well as checking out our new website (linked below). Please feel welcome to share your feedback using the email at the bottom of the newsletter.

Fun Fact: CCA was founded by best friends Keith Griffin (Wake Forest) and Bill Strickland (USC), and actually stemmed from the NC Speech and Theatre Association.

 Spotlight of the Month

Coastal Carolina Taking Communication Activism to the Next Level...

In a time where political and social change is more important than ever, Dr. Deborah Breede, a Communication and Media Studies Professor at Coastal Carolina University, is taking communication activism to the next level. In her Communication Activism (COMM 345) class, undergraduate students first learn about the field of communication activism and explore various current social justice issues current within the public discourse. Then, they choose, plan, budget, market,
stage, and assess a communication activism project related to a social issue of their choosing. This is an active, intensive course that combines service learning with perspectives and practices from communication, health promotion, social science, and journalism. This course is designed for students committed to social activism. Below, you will see just a few photographs from some of the projects that these student activists have held.

Got 10 minutes to spare? Help Dr. John Edward's with his research:

CCA member Dr. John Edwards, Assistant Communication Professor at Methodist University, is collecting data on how public speaking teachers interact with students in the online public speaking course. This study defines public speaking teachers as instructors or professors in either the 2-year or 4-year college or university who teach a course that is focused on how to write and present a speech. There are typically multiple speeches presented by students throughout the semester.

The intent of this study is to gather information that describes how the "typical" online public speaking course works. There are 11 questions that ask about course policies and practices related to collection of student work (i.e., how students submit speeches) and technological tools used to interact with students. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

This project has been approved by the Methodist University Institutional Review Board. All responses will remain confidential and secure. The survey is deployed using QuestionPro, an independent research firm, to collect your confidential survey responses.  The survey will close 30 April 2018.
Thank you in advance for your valuable insights.

  • What he enjoyed most about last year's conference: "CCA is a wonderful opportunity for (1) getting to know our peers and colleagues in the Carolinas and (2) providing opportunities for students (and faculty!) to present their work and learn about communication in a low-pressure and highly supportive environment."
  • Fun fact: "I'm honored to be serving CCA in this role after stepping in for my colleague and friend at Queens, Leanne Pupchek, who was elected to this position back in 2016. We wish Leanne all the best for a speedy recovery and hope that we can all enjoy her vision for #CCA18 in Charlotte!"
