Hello <<First Name>>
and welcome to the

Better-late-than-never edition of

It's been a while, true...

Quite possibly, we are seeing the worst season for winter rowing for some time, with more race events cancelled than in the past 20+ years; as far as one can tell, near double the number on previous Head seasons.

Of the last 126 days, we have spent 90 of them off the water owing to high winds or high river levels brought about by heavy rains, or both! As if it needs saying, of course, safety comes first.

So, well done to all who stuck with the land training programme, seeing improved fitness and overall basic technique - hopefully we can look forward to a busy March of racing: bit.ly/WEYToRace

And again, as we are still off our stretch of river, please check below for details of this weekend's training plans...

Friday February 28th saw 18 students from Jubilee High School compete in the National Junior Indoor Championships (NJIRC), with WEY members pushing out some truly solid performances, placing: 12th from 243 in Yr 9 (Boys), 13th from 145 in Yr 10 (Girls), 28th, 41st and 42nd from 145 in Yr 10 (Boys)

With high hopes for the high waters to recede soon, all those expecting to boat on 'Yellow boards' should have completed and passed the new part of the Certificate of Competency (CoC or basic watermanship), in addition to the bit.ly/WEYWaterSafetyQuiz.

Introduced a few weeks ago in response to another club running into to trouble, the 'Yellow boards safety protocol' means being able to erg at a defined weight-adjusted split (posted in clubroom and
here) at rate 20 for 3 x 10' (rest: 3'). The aim is to be as consistent as possible across the 3 intervals with the 2nd interval being the one recorded.
And in case you don't know or can't remember if you are an RA (Risk Assessor), this list should answer that burning question: "Do I have a CoW?"

Pre-outing Risk Assessments
One fine day soon we shall return to rowing on our reach! As ever, remember to account for the various factors, including:
EA boards, flow rate and river level, the state or behaviour of the weirpool at Shepperton Lock (if unsure, go look), the experience and strength of those boating, boat type/size, wind speeds and direction, air and water temperatures, weather generally (including likelihood of lightning), and visibility.
