Dear <<First Name>>,

Did you miss me?

We were away for a few days in Suffolk — very nice it was too. Deben Rowing Club have a smart boathouse but the river is very muddy — to my puppy's great delight!

Rigger Jiggers

That indispensable tool for all rowers — if you need one (and if you don't already have one you do need one) we have a few available for sale from the Club. They are £5 each (cost price) but once gone are £7.99 from Rock The Boat.

Events to consider

Please talk to your group coordinator (Ladies - Rachel, Men - Clive Curd) about entering the Great Ouse race on 5th September and the Womens' Head in March 2022. By March most novice rowers will have largely had a full season of rowing and be ready to try this race on the Tideway (the bit of the Thames that runs through London). Not quite sure of the course as the Hammersmith Bridge issue is still a bit of a problem but hopefully will be sorted by then. Juniors too (Kostas/Scott/Matt). The Great Ouse Marathon is an enjoyable event; long at 21k but a way to get together and have some fun.

Additional coaching

If you feel you could do with a bit of extra help with your rowing, either individually or as a crew, Matt may available to assist. His email address is matt@wrcjnr.com. Payment is directly to Matt, not through the club.

Another goal for which to aim

All beginners should aim to have completed their Certificate of Competency and Yellow Board Test by the end of August, please. Again, talk to your coordinator about this.

Please bear in mind that as we move into autumn and winter we will encounter more yellow boards and if you haven't passed the test you won't be able to be roistered for a boat. The YBT is designed to ensure you can row back upstream when the river is running at a fast pace. You will be given a weight-adjusted split to achieve over three 10 minute ergos pieces in relatively quick succession. Don't just turn up and expect to do it — we've seen some results that sadly surprised members.

Our new boats...

...are just off the northwest tip of Spain and hopefully will be with us on 12th July. I know one will be called Leif. The front-runners for the other coxless quad are:

Every Which Wey, Two Metres aWey, Clean aWey, That's the Wey and Wey Aheadwhat do members think?

…and it's not only boats

Scott advises that some new kit is nearly with us so if you ordered kit — stand by!

Upcoming events

Molesey on 18th, Staines on 24th. Kingston is on 10th/11th but we're not doing it this year.

Restrictions at the Club

…continue as noted last week until advised otherwise: masks if you can't socially distance; limits on numbers of people in the changing rooms—come ready dressed for rowing; strict limits on indoor training.
