I do hope you are all bearing up after the first week (or is it two... I've lost track) of lockdown #3. I wanted to write to let you know about activities within the Club.

Tuesday evening circuits

Junior Head Coach Matt Beagley is running a circuit session on Tuesday evenings. This is, obviously, online via Google Meet and the access code is No particular equipment is required; cans of beans from the cupboard are useful... and you can later have them over a nice jacket potato!

Previously we have run this session at 18:00 but have had a couple of comments that it's slightly too early, so Matt's moved it to 18:30 (sign in by 18:25 please) for this week and we'll see how it helps. It's open to ALL members, senior, Junior and Vets (sorry, Masters) and is free of charge.

Wednesday evening Pilates

Kay has a very popular Pilates session on Wednesday evenings at 19:30 (sign in by 19:25 please). The access code is (sometimes it works better as, don't ask me why, it just does for some).

Saturday morning ergos

Kay is also running an adults ergo session, mainly aimed at novice members (but all welcome), online through (same code as her Pilates). This starts at 10:00 (sign in by 09:55 please). You won't be surprised to know that you do need an ergo to take part... Just sayin'.

Club-based virtual event

Bewl Rowing Club are running a fun event January 28th to 31st and February 18th to 21st based around a 5k ergo or run. The Juniors are supporting the event and although entry is free, BRC have requested a donation to charity (of our choice); as Captain I have nominated that the entry fee is £5 (which we will collect through the race entries fund) and all such entry fees will be collated and donated to Weybridge Food Bank. The 200 Club supported this charity at Christmas and whilst we probably won't generate the outstanding £1,000 that Greg managed to produce... every little helps, as they say. For more information, please visit I think individuals will make their own entries, but just tell Rachel so that we know to collect the entry donation.

Row the Thames

Richard Packer reminds me of Row The Thames, details of which may be found at Entry is £25 but I think Juniors are free and the event encourages the use of rowing machines, indoor bikes, running machines, ski ergs and arm bikes (what's an arm bike?). Anyway, March 22nd to 29th is when, how is... on their website.

Looking forward

Whilst we are stuck at home and it's grey January, Summer seems a long way off. However, we will get out of this and as part of the Club's planned programme of equipment renewal for the benefit of members, I'm delighted to advise that we have managed to get a stonking deal (thanks to Rachel's tenacity) on two new quad/fours for club use. Having not used two year's worth of budget we were (she was) able to 'persuade' Eric Sims to knock over £1,600 off the price of new Kanghua Phantoms which will stand us all in good stead once the perfect warm summer weather with endlessly sunny days and benign water conditions and no lockdown restrictions come upon us. (Where's that emoji of fingers crossed when you need it?). Thanks to the Committee for being far-sighted and enthusiastically supporting the proposal.

Ergo rentals

Whilst all the club ergos were snapped up at the start of lockdown I am investigating another potential source for club members. I know of at least two members who missed out last time so here's a call for other members who would like the opportunity to rent a machine. Please let me know if you are interested; my source has 10 machines in total so another 8 should be available (hopefully, if the negotiations work out).

Decent Rowing

A reminder to all members of the Club's subscription to 'Decent Rowing' which is well worth a look. Decent Rowing is an Australian coaching resource that has a wealth of video tutorials; there is something for everyone who wants to learn. You just have to forgive the funny way they speak... but at least the videos aren't upside-down.

This is one login for all club members and coaches. It's available, free-of-charge, to Juniors and Seniors alike. Any number can login at once. Take a look at what's available. Have some fun and share with other members/your crews/your squads:

  • For those who are on the water (remember those days?), there are lots of drills to give focus to a technical session; 
  • For those rather more ergo based, again, lots of good input to help improve right from the very basic first steps; 
  • And also core, stretching and other advice for rowers to train at home.
