Water Safety Update

Hello, <<First Name>>
The weekend lineup is below BUT FIRST...

Members will be fully aware that the river temperature at the moment is extremely low, currently approximately 2 degrees C. However, the dangerous effects on one's body of being immersed in water this cold may not be fully appreciated by everyone. There have been a couple of capsizes in the last week or so and those involved would no doubt give full testament to the implications of experiencing such an unplanned event in the existing conditions.

British Rowing include reference to Cold Water Immersion in ‘RowSafe’ - following the button below will take you to the relevant section and members are strongly advised to read it:
RowSafe: Cold Water Immersion & Hypothermia [PDF]
Obviously, those most at risk of capsize are single scullers - but not exclusively so. In conducting their normal Risk Assessment (RA) before commencing an outing, all members should include full recognition of the real danger inherent in falling in very cold water, although this will necessarily be measured against the likelihood of doing so. Single scullers will be very well advised to only contemplate proceeding with an outing in these conditions if they can ‘buddy’ with someone else. The presence of another person could well be crucial in ensuring a safe outcome should they fall in.

In order to help inform pre-outing RAs, it is strongly recommended that whilst the water is still so cold, each member - single sculler or otherwise - takes a little time out to conduct the following ‘test’. Simply kneel on the pontoon and place one uncovered arm in the water, immersing it up to the elbow for just a single minute (less, if you can’t cope with it for that long). Further proof of the potential debilitating effects of a capsize in water at its current low temperature will most probably not be required.
