The Just-in-time-for-the-weekend edition of

Hello <<First Name>>, the weekend lineup is below but first...

Rowing in cold weather

Following cold, sodden conditions during a recent time trial, here is a reminder of a few things to consider when deciding whether or not to row during the increasingly cold weather:
  • Clothing – Make sure you are appropriately dressed and prepared for changes in weather conditions. That includes considering the use of pogies or single layer gloves such as sailing gloves, which it is perfectly possible to row in if the correct ones are worn. Multi-layers of clothing of a modern wicking type that does not hold water is recommended. You may consider wearing a life-jacket or buoyancy aid particularly if going out in a single scull.
  • Food and drink – Ensure you have eaten sufficiently before you exercise and if the outing is longer than an hour take a bottle of appropriate drink with you.
  • Cold water immersion has a high risk of harm associated with it. All club members should read the RowSafe guidance (Chapter 8, link to PDF) and be aware of the effects of cold shock and hypothermia.
  • Risk Assessment and Recovery Plans – Our water safety page online including a link to our Risk Assessment guidelines and Safety Brochure details specific hazards and considerations for our stretch - click here for a refresher. Also, plans are afoot to improve logging and visibility of who's boated and expected return.
  • Safety equipment – Carrying certain safety equipment is detailed on our website - also at weybridgerowing.club/water-safety - along with specific guidelines for launch drivers.
  • Ice is an important indicator of extreme cold. It is a risk on land – slipping and dropping the boat – and on the water – floating sheets of ice can damage boats.

Update: the fish pass and temporary boat racking

Work to provide a temporary ‘fix’ to shore-up the bank at the entrance to Coulson’s Channel has been completed. The crane platform/barge has been removed and will not return until next Spring, when a permanent repair will be effected and the fish pass installed - or not!

In the meantime, I continue to press the contractor regarding when the temporary boat rack and associated decking will be installed on the bank above the pontoon; this will enable us to retrieve the 2 Eights currently stored at WLARC - watch this space for another update soon...

This note may be slightly redundant right now, but signing up after the cut-off or having to chase for availability does delay being able to release the lineup in good time... You know who you are! Please remember to check your availability by Tuesday midnight for the coming weekend and sign up as far in advance as possible - with the Wey Hey! mobile app this should be easier.

If your availability changes after the cut-off, please sign up as usual but also email captain@weybridgerowing.org.uk to be sure the change is noted - every effort will be made to allocate you a crew. If you are unable to make a session at the last moment, you are best texting 07429 520627 - thank you.
