Dear <<First Name>>,

Boat naming and 200 Club

The new Kanghua quad/four Leif was named by his daughter and officially launched into service. Thanks to Greg, Anne and Gus for running the first 200 Club in a year and running four draws and two bars.

Sadly, my phone and computer are no longer talking to one-another so the photos I took are unavailable to me which is really annoying. If you have any photos you would like to share, please send to or upload to this album — thank you.

Boat and club maintenance day

Thanks to Scott for arranging the boat maintenance morning last Saturday and to Pete who, should he ever decide to forsake the world of finance, has as a new career as a short-order chef — and all those who took part in whatever way.

Cumpper is now back in operation following a clean and re-fit. All the Wey and some of the other Senior mens' boats are off to Eric Simms for some TLC to extend their service life.

Row-Paddle-Run Elmbridge in support of The Grace Dear Trust, October 10th

Row-Paddle-Run Elmbridge, Sunday October 10th

A further reminder: we have jointly organised this event to raise funds in support of the The Grace Dear Trust, to help young people who are struggling with mental health.

Anyone who wishes to can row, paddle, run, or walk to the finish at Molesey Boat Club — for details and to register, go to

Weybridge Silver Sculls, Saturday October 16th

We will need not only entries from Weybridge members, but also help on the day. The usual convention is that if you wish to compete in the event, you help out at the event.

Please do join in — it's an important event for the club... I have created a volunteer registration form which I hope will work(!) — you can access it here

Boat handling

What NOT to do with our boats! What’s wrong with this picture…?

Boat handling: What not to do!
Please, please, DO NOT carry our boats this way, i.e. from the ends — NOT when putting boats on the water and NOT when lifting them off the water. It puts a tremendous bending stress on the boat.

We have already lost one boat in recent memory exactly this way — it snapped in the middle and part of it is in the roof of the club house as a reminder! Boats are expensive and the new generation of competition quality boats are fragile and need to be handled with care, please, by everyone.

So, what should we be doing?

  • Carry boats (1x if with 2 people, and 2x/2-) from as close to the cockpit as you can, and no further than 1/2 of the way along the canvas.
  • When lifting the boat from the water you MUST lift:
    • 2x/2- from the cockpit; either from the cross bars if present or holding the cockpit with one hand on each side;
    • 1x from ½ way along the canvas.

C-R-Y: Cardiac Research in the Young

A few parents have managed to get their youngsters checked out by C-R-Y, who have re-started their heart testing service in a small way in Leatherhead. I understand that testing slots are snapped up as soon as they are released, so if you register and get an email you need to move, fast! It's free so please do take the opportunity to get checked.

We have seen recently some sad tales of young people having heart problems in public places. Footballers have been in the news. Many of you will remember I have written about my personal experience of this and why I promote to you every so often — do it now; tomorrow could be too late!

The Annual General Meeting… confirmed as Thursday, September 30th via Zoom. The Notice of AGM was sent to members on September 9th, so if you have not seen it, please check your spam/junk folder or promotions tab (Gmail users).

If you are a member of the Club, we urge you to join the meeting and (if over 16) you can vote for your new Club Committee, including principal officers: Captain, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Time Trials…

…are once again in operation.

The first of the new season was successfully and enjoyably held yesterday in conjunction with Walton RC, with whom we share organisation duties. Helpers are always welcome — you can sign up here

Bye-bye to Mackley's barges

Bye-bye Mackley

Members will have noted progress on the fish pass project to the extent that Mackley's barges have departed their mooring off the club bank for pastures anew.

We will arrange to replace the bit of the pontoon that was removed to enable them to moor the barge and look forward to the quads and eights rack being reinstated sometime this week, under Graham's watchful eye.

I am awaiting a quote for some artificial grass to be laid over the bald patch outside the ladies' changing room. This will help to keep the weeds down, provide a dust and mud-free area and bring a semblance of order to the entrance to the club.

Love Admin?

Who does? Claudine has been keeping on top of ways we can improve the many aspects of club administration, including our compliance with the UK GDPR — and found the solution in a system called LoveAdmin.

LoveAdmin is used quite widely already by rowing and other sports clubs and member societies. We have taken the decision and opportunity to change system at the turn of the club year, i.e. now!

In preparation for the move to LoveAdmin, please expect or look out for the following:

  • Just ahead of the AGM: an email from Rachel confirming your Direct Debit through GoCardless is cancelled. Not to worry, though, the new system needs your authorisation also and handles payments in much the same way; just a different provider.
  • Just after the AGM: an introductory email from Claudine but coming via LoveAdmin asking you to setup your account and authorise payment — this is not spam! If not in your inbox, please do check your spam folders and add to your ‘safe senders’ — here’s how

As always, stay safe — and remember, social distancing, please!
