February: Parade of Cohousing

As local realtors kick off their spring Parade of Homes, we have our own Parade of Cohousing in which representatives of urban cohousing communities in Portland OR, Washington DC, and Richmond VA will share what they find gratifying about their cohousing experience.

Circles are the member and explorer working groups that make our project happen!
Site Search - Our mandate is to find sites suitable for our project in the St Paul or Minneapolis urban core. We've been engaging with planning departments to identify areas with suitable zoning and proximity to transit, and engaging professionals (e.g., architects, brokers) essential to move our project forward. Progress is being made on all fronts.
  • We formed a task force to prepare and send out "requests for proposal" to architectural firms; with Katie McCamant, our cohousing consultant, we will interview 4 firms in February. The firm selected will help evaluate sites, design our building and work with city planning officials.
  • We've identified numerous possible sites based on leads from brokers and city planning officials and internet searches.
Outreach - Our mandate is to find households interested in joining our cohousing project by planning and publicizing public events and maintaining contact with CCLLC members, explorers, and followers. Progress is being made here as well.
  • We've put in place a project plan that identifies, assigns and schedules tasks to publicize and deliver monthly public events that will attract members and explorers to join us.
  • We've formed a sub-group for prospect follow-up.
Governance/Legal/Finance - Our mandate is to ensure that we operate consistent with laws and regulations, all voices in our community are heard and respected, and that participant financial contributions are managed prudently.
  • We've interviewed lawyers specializing in common interest communities to counsel us over the life-cycle of our project and have narrowed our choice to two finalists.

  • Members and explorers attended Sociocracy sessions to sharpen our skills at consensus decision making.
