Macon County to launch virtual academy this Fall

 Advocates for Animals of WNC will host an Easter photoshoot for pets and children (or both) from noon to 6 p.m. April 3 at the Innovation Station in Dillsboro. Plenty of outdoor activities throughout the day, too. Music by Kim Smith. Small raffle items will also be offered. 

The new Cashiers Greenway Ramble StoryWalk is now complete, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, April 2, set to coincide with International Children’s Book Day and a socially distanced visit from the Easter Bunny planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3. Register at

Macon County Animal Services Rabies Shots for all dogs, cats and ferrets are $10. Vaccination clinics will be held on Saturday, March 27, 9 a.m. to noon, East Franklin Elementary; and Saturday, March 27, 1 to 3 p.m. at Mountain View Intermediate; Saturday, April 10, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Cartoogechaye Elementary. Pets must be kept in the vehicles or on a leash. State law requires all dogs, cats and ferrets over the age of 4 months to have the rabies vaccine. For more information, call (828)349-2106.

 Author Bob Plott will present his latest work, Smoky Mountain Railways, during a special drop-in book signing at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at City Lights Bookstore in Sylva. Plott will also make an appearance at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at Blue Ridge Books in Waynesville 

 The annual Adopt-A-Highway Spring Litter Sweep is coming up April 10 to 24, and volunteers are needed to help the N.C. Department of Transportation remove litter from roadsides. Volunteers will receive cleanup supplies such as trash bags, gloves and safety vests and are encouraged to follow COVID-19 safety guidance while out and about. Sign up at or call 919.707.297

Bryson City Wine Market offers a glass of wine and a Market Plate Monday through Saturday as well as special flight tastings from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Friday and Saturday


The Nantahala Hiking Club will take a moderate 4.5-mile hike on Saturday, March 27, to Round Mountain near Cashiers. The club will meet at Cashiers Recreation Park at 10 a.m.  Call Leaders, Mike and Susan Kettles, 828.743.1079, for reservations. Visitors are welcome.

 The inaugural Running of the Goats 5K and Nature Walk will take place at the WNC Nature Center in Asheville on Sunday, April 25. Registration is limited and rolling starts with waves between 7:30 and 9 a.m. will allow for distancing. Proceeds will benefit Friends of the WNC Nature Center and support programs throughout the park. Register at

Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail will hold its annual Gathering of Friends virtually this year, planning an event for Friday and Saturday, March 26-27. While the event will be virtual, the agenda will be open and participatory. Learn more at Membership starts at $35


Holly Springs Baptist Church, 2nd Mile Ministry is open 10 to Noon Mondays providing a food pantry, children's clothes and financial aid (rent and utilities) for families and seniors in need. 

Friends of the Greenway  FROG Quarters is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m.,  at 573 E. Main in Franklin. Stop by for coffee or a soft drink and a snack, use our free internet.  You can also reserve the shelters for your events there.

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.

Uptown Gallery on Main Street new hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Fridays for drive up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.

Gospel Conversations Training Conference: Tom Ford is coordinating this Free Gospel Conversations Conference on March 6 from 8:30 to 4:30. A boxed lunch will be provided in the Fellowship Hall. This hands-on interactive training includes practice of all the tools with an option to engage people in your community as we pray for laborers to be mobilized for the mission.
