Events and Activities:

June 4th from 630 to 830 p.m. Jackson County Fire & Life Safety will be having their annual water safety night at the Sylva Pool. This event is free and they encourage everyone to bring their families and come out and enjoy a night of fun! Free swimming, prizes, educational materials, and of course the return of the EPIC CANNON BALL CONTEST! 

The “Unto These Hills” stage production will be held at 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday from May 19 through Aug. 14 at the Mountainside Theater in Cherokee. There will also be a 10:30 a.m. show all Saturdays in July. For more information and to purchase tickets, click on www.cherokeehistorical.org.

Grief Share Group: Grieving for the loss of someone close to you? GriefShare is a special weekly seminar and support group designed to help you rebuild your life. We know it hurts, and we want to help. Grief Share will meet on Wednesdays at 5:30 in the Chapel. COVID precautions are taken and online is an option. We have free workbooks in the conference room.

Franklin Women’s Club Social Kick-off Luncheon will be held on Friday, June 11, noon at Fat Buddies restaurant in Westgate Plaza for a   The Board will provide ice cream cakes to celebrate the fact that the club is able to meet in public again. Macon County Art Association Veteran’s Portrait Project will be held this year.  Spots are open for four to seven veterans as  applications remained from 2019.  Macon County veterans or their family members can apply to have the veteran’s portrait painted by a local artist at the gallery between Memorial Day and July 4. There is no cost to apply or for the portraits.  The only requirement is that the veteran or their family member be present to receive the portrait on Veterans Day.  Community members who wish to help support the costs for this program are also welcome.  For more information, email at karen@programservices.org.

Farmer’s Market (with artisans) will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through October at 117 Island Street in Bryson City. Stop by the old barn by the river for local, homegrown produce, as well as baked goods, jellies and preserves, authentic crafts, and more. Food truck, picnic tables and a strolling musician

Ron Hunnicutt exhibit at Macon County Public Library

“Faces,” an exhibit of drawings by the late Ron Hunnicutt, who passed away in February, will be held May 15 through the end of June at the Macon County Public Library in Franklin. The public is invited to an opening reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the library. 828.524.3600.

Community Social Bike Ride

The Nantahala Bike Club will sponsor a community social ride starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at Friends of the Greenway headquarters in Franklin. Friends of the Greenway will have hot dogs, drinks and food for sale and a social ride will follow along the greenway, highlighting the new Main Street under-bridge connector. 828.369.8488.

Hiking:

Nantahala Hiking Club will hike to Thomas Divide to Kamari in GSMNP on Saturday, June 5,  8:30 to 3:30 p.m. The total distance will be 4 miles, hike rating M.  For more information, details or reservations, call Gail Lehman (828)524-5298

Holly Springs Baptist Church, 2nd Mile Ministry is open 10 to Noon Mondays providing a food pantry, children's clothes and financial aid (rent and utilities) for families and seniors in need. 

Friends of the Greenway  FROG Quarters is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m.,  at 573 E. Main in Franklin. Stop by for coffee or a soft drink and a snack, use our free internet.  You can also reserve the shelters for your events there.

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.

Uptown Gallery on Main Street new hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Fridays for drive up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.

Employment assistance is offered by NC Works Career Center from 1:30-4 p.m. on the first Friday of every month at Marianna Black Library in Bryson City. 488.3030 or

Macon County Public Health is currently vaccinating those eligible under Groups 4. People in Group 4  are those who have a medical condition that puts them at higher risk of serious illness and people who live in certain congregate settings are eligible for vaccination. The rest of Group 4, which includes all other essential workers and all adults will become eligible April 7. Individuals that want to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, must call Macon County’s Vaccine Call Center at (828)524-1500 to register and schedule an appointment. The Call Center is open Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Celebrate Recovery at Discover Church every Monday night at 6 p.m. Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered, 12-step recovery program for anyone struggling with hurt, pain or addiction of any kind. Prentiss Church of God is holding Sunday worship service in its sanctuary beginning at 10:30 a.m. Social distancing is observed and safety measures are in place.  Services are also streamed online on the Prentiss Church of God Facebook page. Gospel Conversations Training Conference: Tom Ford is coordinating this Free Gospel Conversations Conference on March 6 from 8:30 to 4:30. A boxed lunch will be provided in the Fellowship Hall. This hands-on interactive training includes practice of all the tools with an option to engage people in your community as we pray for laborers to be mobilized for the mission.
