As the gas shortage comes to an end, Jackson County station open talks about impact

 
Saturday night, Jackson County resident and owner of two gas stations Cory Coleman was at home with his family when he saw a news headline about a cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline. Coleman and his wife own the Valero across from the paper plant and the How Convenient station across from Harold’s Supermarket in Jackson County. Despite the headlines, Coleman didn’t think much of the news or the impact it could have on his business over the next week.   Click here to Continue Reading 
Ron Hunnicutt exhibit at Macon County Public Library Sat. 22 May, 2021 10:00 am - 11:00 am “Faces,” an exhibit of drawings by the late Ron Hunnicutt, who passed away in February, will be held May 15 through the end of June at the Macon County Public Library in Franklin. SATURDAY AT 11 AM – 3 PM  World Bee Day- Mountain Man Cave Honey, Jackson County Beekeepers, and The Village Green will be co-sponsoring a free event for the public to celebrate World Bee Day on Saturday, May 22nd. This event will be held under the Gazebo at the Cashiers Village Green from 11am-3pm. Tying along with The Village Green’s mission of preserving and enhancing land for our community, this year’s theme is “Bee Engaged”! The event will feature hive demonstrations, various activities and games for all ages, light refreshments and LIVE MUSIC featuring Asheville Singer/Songwriter Oliver Padgett from 1pm-2:30pm. Children activities include many arts and craft and education exhibits.

y will be having their annual water safety night at the Sylva Pool. This event is free and they encourage everyone to bring their families and come out and enjoy a night of fun! Free swimming, prizes, educational materials, and of course the return of the EPIC CANNON BALL CONTEST! 

Raft for Free Sun. 23 May, 2021 10:00 am - 2:00 pm  Raft for free from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 23, at Dillsboro River Company. The company will offer the free rafting event to support United Christian Ministries. To participate, bring 10 cans of food per person as a donation to the nonprofit.  Bring 10 cans of food for United Christian Ministries... Receive a FREE rafting trip from Dillsboro River Company!!!

Cans collected benefit United Christian Ministries (UCM), a crisis response ministry providing food and assistance with rent and heating for people with proven needs as well as furniture distribution. UCM is located at 191 Skyland Drive in Sylva, NC 28779.
*Same rules apply to this event as our daily operations:
- All participants must be at least 4 years of age.
- You must wear foot protection (no flip flops or barefoot)
- NO ALCOHOL or FISHING POLES
- Everyone must wear a PFD (personal flotation device) which we provide for your river excursion.
No rain-checks. No reservations. This is the day you bring the cans and the day you float the river, rain or shine. First come, first serve. 🙂
Be prepared for social distance! If multiple groups arrive at once we may space you out - - be patient.
*As per North Carolina mandate masks are required while indoors and when riding in a shuttle with others. Like 2020, we encourage shuttles prior to your rafting experience for less exposure. This will be explained upon arrival.

Sign up for Sandlot Baseball - All day   Signups are open through May 31 for sandlot baseball leagues in Cullowhee and Sylva. Participants must be between the ages of 5 and 7 by May 1. Games will be played from 6 to 7 p.m. starting the week of June 7. Fee is $25www.rec.jacksonnc.org

Farmer’s Market (with artisans) will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through October at 117 Island Street in Bryson City. Stop by the old barn by the river for local, homegrown produce, as well as baked goods, jellies and preserves, authentic crafts, and more. Food truck, picnic tables and a strolling musician.

Unto These Hills Sat. 22 May, 2021 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm The “Unto These Hills” stage production will be held at 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday from May 19 through Aug. 14 at the Mountainside Theater in Cherokee. MEC is a high school in Macon County offering a smaller academic environment that fosters growth and success. The early college program prepares students for college, career, and life by developing relationships, responsibility, and respect through relevant and rigorous coursework.  MEC serves grades 9-13 and is fully integrated into the Southwestern Community College system. Students have the opportunity to graduate in four or five years with a high school diploma and a two-year Associate’s degree with transferable credits to a four-year university.

Innovation Station in Dillsboro Go Big Thursday- 12pm- 9pm  As they say, "Go big or go home!" On Thursdays we are pulling out all the GIANT games. Join us anytime throughout the day or evening and we'll have all the games set up for you. On the railroad side patio we'll have two tables set up for Wicked Big Pong & Flip Cup. There will also be Giant Connect Four & Giant Jenga.

Hiking:
 

Hike & Identify Native Trees Sun. 23 May, 2021 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Learn to identify native trees and woody plants during a 5-mile hike 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 23, in the Sunburst area of the Pisgah National Forest in Haywood County. The group will meet at the picnic tables behind Jukebox junction in Bethel. Hikers should be prepared to hike through mud and several small streams, and bring their own food and water. Social distancing will be observed, and space is limited to 13. No pets. Free for HWA members and $5 for nonmembers. Holly Springs Baptist Church, 2nd Mile Ministry is open 10 to Noon Mondays providing a food pantry, children's clothes and financial aid (rent and utilities) for families and seniors in need. 

Friends of the Greenway  FROG Quarters is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m.,  at 573 E. Main in Franklin. Stop by for coffee or a soft drink and a snack, use our free internet.  You can also reserve the shelters for your events there.

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.

Uptown Gallery on Main Street new hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Fridays for drive up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.

Employment assistance is offered by NC Works Career Center from 1:30-4 p.m. on the first Friday of every month at Marianna Black Library in Bryson City. 488.3030 or
