Down Home Concert Series brings country music star to Macon, Jackson Counties


Joe Lasher, Jr.  will be pulling into Franklin this weekend to perform in the Yard at Lazy Hiker Brewing Company. Lasher’s performance is part of a tour around WNC in partnership with Ingles Markets for the “Ingles Down Home Concert Series” benefiting local food pantries.

 Blue Ridge Parkway rangers will host a new outdoor interpretive series dubbed “Fridays at the Folk Art Center” at 7:30 p.m. every Friday this season at the Folk Art Center in Asheville. The Highland Brewing Night Flight 4.5-mile race will return on Saturday, July 17. Runners will step off at 7:30 p.m.  A post-race party and awards ceremony will be held at the Meadow. Cost is $43. Register at  www.iamathlete.com

The Unto These Hills stage production will be held at 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday from May 19 through Aug. 14 at the Mountainside Theater in Cherokee. There will also be a 10:30 a.m. show all Saturdays in July. For more information and to purchase tickets, click on www.cherokeehistorical.org

The Cashiers Village Crawl will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. July 16. Live music from Nitrograss at the Commons and Spalding McIntosh & The Lionhearts at the Gazebo. Both shows are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wine tasting and food trucks will also be onsite. Free and open to the public.

V.F.W. Welcome Back Cookout will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2 to 5 p.m., at the V.F.W., 60 W. Palmer St.  There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, beans and watermelon. A 50/50 drawing will be held at 2:55, buffet will open at 3 p.m. There will not be take-outs. 

American Legion Macon Post 108 Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. If you have an unserviceable U.S. flag, place it in the large red, white, and blue mailbox in front of the post and it will be disposed of with proper decorum. Holly Springs Community Development Club will meet on Monday, July 19, 6 p.m., at the community building located at 2720 Cat Creek Rd.  There will be a pot luck supper served, so bring your favorite side dish or dessert and a friend.

Hiking:
 

Nantahala Hiking Club on Friday, July 16, will hike to Smokemont Loop in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park From Smokemont Campground go up Bradley Fork to the junction of the loop. Cross Bradley Fork on a long footbridge to the other side. There is a 1.7 climb to the ridge line. On the down side you will see an old cemetery with stones dating from late 1800’s to 1925.  For reservations and more information, call Leader Laura Lauffer call (919)444-1478. 

Nantahala Hiking Club  on Saturday, July 17, will hike to Long Ridge in the Mulberry community. Hike 3 steep climbs through sheer cliffs and rock formations to the Rock House. Holly Springs Baptist Church, 2nd Mile Ministry is open 10 to Noon Mondays providing a food pantry, children's clothes and financial aid (rent and utilities) for families and seniors in need. 

Friends of the Greenway  FROG Quarters is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m.,  at 573 E. Main in Franklin. Stop by for coffee or a soft drink and a snack, use our free internet.  You can also reserve the shelters for your events there.

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.

Uptown Gallery on Main Street new hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Fridays for drive up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.

Employment assistance is offered by NC Works Career Center from 1:30-4 p.m. on the first Friday of every month at Marianna Black Library in Bryson City. 488.3030 or

Macon County Public Health is currently vaccinating those eligible under Groups 4. People in Group 4  are those who have a medical condition that puts them at higher risk of serious illness and people who live in certain congregate settings are eligible for vaccination. The rest of Group 4, which includes all other essential workers and all adults will become eligible April 7. Individuals that want to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, must call Macon County’s Vaccine Call Center at (828)524-1500 to register and schedule an appointment. The Call Center is open Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
