It is no secret that my husband is in law enforcement. What you may not know is that in the last two months calls that my husband were own ended up near our children’s daycare. On two separate occasions, just a few months apart, my two and three-year children were shuffled like cattle into the bathroom to hide from the “bad guy.” 

Sawyer came home from school after the first incident and clearly explained how she and her friends hid in the bathroom and had to be quiet because there was a criminal less than 100 yards from their school. It was a high-speed chase and he was a fugitive. Due to the nature of my work, and because Nick was one of the ones on the call that lead to the apprehension of the suspect… Nick and I didn’t even think twice about the situation. The fact that our three-year-old daughter had to huddle silently in a bathroom with her teacher used herself as a shield to protect them from the “bad guy,” was nothing to us — we were desensitized to it. For us, it was just another hazard of the job. And that isn’t ok. 

I do not want cowering in the bathroom to hide from the bad guy to be the “normal” world my children grow up in. I do not want it to be the normal that your children grow up in. I do not want that fear to be the normal the families of Robb Elementary School in Texas live with the rest of their lives. 

There is going to be a lot of talk over the next few days — politics are going to dominate that conversation and lead the discussion one way or the other. As a country, we are going to continue to be divided and it is going to be us or them. I wish that wasn’t the fact of the matter, but unfortunately, that is the “normal” we live in. 

In a few days, those political discussions will stop. And the families of the victims in Texas will be forgotten. We don’t have a gun problem. We have a people problem. Ribbons and thoughts and prayers aren't going to fix it.  And until we are able to fix that,  in a month, or six months, there will be another school. Another Robb Elementary. Another Sandy Hook. Another Columbine. And this cycle will continue and more children will be taken too soon. More mothers will hug their babies for the last time.
