Tenn man sentenced for rape; arrest reports from WNC

As most of you know, I absolutely love to write. After all, that is how the Southern Scoop came to be. I don’t get the luxury of having the ability to do a lot of feature writing or editorials, because most of my time is consumed with staying current on the news across Western North Carolina, however, in 2022, I want to make that more of a priority.

My intention in the new year is to include personal notes or editorials in every newsletter I send out. These will be about current events, my take on news topics, or just me saying hello. I think what makes The Southern Scoop special is you know who you are getting your news from. I am not just a name on a byline. You know me and hopefully, you trust me. You know my family, our likes and our dislikes. I think that human connection is what makes all small businesses special — what makes all of them thrive — and I don’t want the Southern Scoop to be any different.

While I understand there is separation because as a news outlet I am supposed to remain impartial, unbiased, removed from the day-to-day. And while I understand that when it comes to the New York Times or the Washington Post — it would be disingenuous to promise you that is what you are going to get 100% of the time here. Because the truth is, I am at these little league games. I consider the All-Star teams my babies, so you better believe I am going to make it a priority to share in their accomplishments. My nieces cheer on the competition cheer teams, so I want to share about their tournaments. I have covered every local government meeting in Macon County for over a decade, something not another person in Macon County can say, so I have a unique perspective of the day-to-day. Those local leaders are friends — and some frenemies— so I have an insight and view that is unique. I don’t want to limit that, I want to share that. I want to be transparent.

Macon County finds Tenn man guilty of rape

A man who forced his way into a Macon County woman’s residence, assaulting and raping her, has been sentenced to the maximum possible prison sentence under state law, District Attorney Ashley Hornsby Welch said.

Last week, a Macon County jury found Joseph Ball, 42, of Etowah, Tennessee, guilty of second-degree forcible rape, first-degree burglary, interference with emergency communications, kidnapping, and assault on a female.
