WNC school districts reversing policy to mandate masks this fall

 
As COVID19 cases across the state continue to rise, schools in Western North Carolina are reversing course and now requiring masks this upcoming school year. 

 



Bryson City seeks public input on land use plan


The Town of Bryson City is updating our land use plan to help guide future changes that will affect residents and visitors over the next 25 years. Our previous land use plan was adopted in 2008 and we have seen a lot of changes since that time.

Red Cross Blood Drives are being held in Franklin Friday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 6 p.m., at Discover Church, 47 Macon Center Drive; and in Highlands on Friday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Highlands School, 545 Pierson Drive; and Monday, Aug. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 3645 Cashiers Rd. To donate blood, bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification that are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and others 18 years of age and younger must meet certain height and weight requirements.


Macon County Public Library will be hosting some NC author talks/book signings 
in the library at the end of the month and September. Susan Meissner, and on September 4th, Kristin Harmel. 

ReUnite Ministries is hosting its first official fundraiser on Saturday, August 14. Starting at Cade’s Cove Jeep in Townsend at 11 a.m., the ride will end at Revolution Church around 1 p.m. But don’t plan to go home.
Music, food, auction items, and a lot of other good stuff will be happening in the front parking lot of the church. All proceeds will go to ReUnite.
Jeeps will factor big, but no one cares if you don’t have one. Drive your truck, antique car or beater—just join in. More information will be coming soon. Check our Facebook page for updates. 



Car Seat Clinic Monday-Friday 8am-4pm closed 12-1 for lunch. Clinics will be held in the Beloced Womens and Children's Building 73 kaiser Wilnoty rd in Cherokee. Children Must be present and your EBCI enrollment card for both Parent and Childs. Car seat cost $20 for seats 

“Dillsboro After Five” will take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in downtown Dillsboro. Start with a visit to the Jackson County Farmers Market located in the Innovation Station parking lot.

Macon County Art Association  Encaustic Painting Classes will be held on Fridays,  Aug. 27, Sept. 3 and 17, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m.  to 12 p.m.,  at the Uptown Gallery 30 E Main St., Franklin.  For more information, call Karen Smith, at karen@programservices.org

Cleaning up the Mountains- Each year, we work on sprucing up downtown prior to the Greening Up the Mountains festival in collaboration with the Town of Sylva Public Works, The Rotary Club of Sylva, Sylva Garden Club and Main Street merchants.
Since the festival was postponed until August 28 of this year, we are making a special effort to make things look nice. We will have clean-up days downtown on Friday, Aug. 13 and Saturday, Aug. 14.
The Rotary, Garden Club and Public Works will be weeding, mulching bump-outs, possibly pressure washing and assisting downtown merchants who are unable to clean up around their storefronts.
If you would like to help out, please come downtown and connect with the Rotary folks!


 Blue Ridge Parkway rangers will host a new outdoor interpretive series dubbed “Fridays at the Folk Art Center” at 7:30 p.m. every Friday this season at the Folk Art Center in Asheville. The building will not be open during the programs, with no restrooms available on site. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on.  828.298.5330, ext. 302.

Concerts on the Creek (Sylva) at Bridge Park will host a performance by The Get Right Band on August 13th  All shows begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. www.mountainlovers.com.

The Unto These Hills stage production will be held at 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday from May 19 through Aug. 14 at the Mountainside Theater in Cherokee. There will also be a 10:30 a.m. show all Saturdays in July. For more information and to purchase tickets, click on www.cherokeehistorical.org

Alzheimer’s Association Western Carolina Chapter Telephone Support Group for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia is designed to provide caregivers opportunities for sharing, education, and support through a telephone conference. Holly Springs Baptist Church, 2nd Mile Ministry is open 10 to Noon Mondays providing a food pantry, children's clothes and financial aid (rent and utilities) for families and seniors in need. 

Friends of the Greenway  FROG Quarters is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to  2 p.m.,  at 573 E. Main in Franklin. Stop by for coffee or a soft drink and a snack, use our free internet.  You can also reserve the shelters for your events there.

Smoky Mountain Pregnancy Care Centers in Cullowhee and Franklin have an educational parenting program to earn “points” to use to obtain free items for your family. The centers carry formula, diapers, wipes, baby items and clothing up to size 6, as well as strollers, car seats, high chairs, pack n’ plays, etc. Donations are always welcome. CareNet on Bidwell Street will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  A box of food may be picked up once a week.

Uptown Gallery on Main Street new hours are Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Five Fire Departments in Macon County – Nantahala, Cullasaja, Sky Valley, Clarks Chapel, and Burningtown – are open Monday thru Fridays for drive up food deliveries from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who needs food.

Macon County Public Health is currently vaccinating those eligible under Groups 4. People in Group 4  are those who have a medical condition that puts them at higher risk of serious illness and people who live in certain congregate settings are eligible for vaccination. The rest of Group 4, which includes all other essential workers and all adults will become eligible April 7. Individuals that want to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, must call Macon County’s Vaccine Call Center at (828)524-1500 to register and schedule an appointment. The Call Center is open Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
