This year’s Open edX Conference will explore new research in online learning, better approaches to collaborative learning and technologies that support it. To start us off, we’ve invited a diverse group of keynote speakers to speak about the future of collaborative learning.

Candace Thille
Associate Professor, Stanford University 

Director of Learning Science, Amazon

Candace Thille works with the Global Learning and Development team to innovate and scale workplace learning at Amazon. She is the founding director of the Open Learning Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford University. Dr. Thille serves on the board of directors of the Association of American Colleges and Universities; as a fellow of the International Society for Design and Development in Education; on the Assessment 2020 Task Force of the American Board of Internal Medicine; and on the advisory council for the Association of American Universities STEM initiative.

Jamie Smith
Chief Marketing Officer, Linux Foundation

Jamie Smith oversees the Linux Foundation’s marketing and communications functions. She previously served President Barack Obama and former Secretaries of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Madeleine K. Albright in a variety of senior press and communications roles. She has held several positions in the U.S. Intelligence Community and the U.S. Senate, at Edelman Worldwide, and at the Bitfury Group and the Global Blockchain Business Council.

Dean Baker
Co-Founder and Senior Economist, CEPR

Dean Baker co-founded CEPR in 1999. His areas of research include housing and macroeconomics, intellectual property, Social Security, Medicare and European labor markets. He is the author of several books, including “Rigged: How Globalization and the Rules of the Modern Economy Were Structured to Make the Rich Richer,” and provides commentary on economic reporting through his blog, "Beat the Press."

Walter Bender
Chief Learning Architect, Sorcero 

Co-Founder, One Laptop per Child
Walter Bender is the chief learning architect at Sorcero, a knowledge-management and learning solutions company. Bender also founded Sugar Labs, which develops and maintains educational software used by millions of children in more than 40 countries. In addition, he co-founded One Laptop per Child, acted as director of the MIT Media Laboratory and founded the MIT News in the Future consortium.
