“Many of my fondest memories are being on the water working with oysters,” says Jacob Dockendorff, President of Atlantic Shellfish Products Inc. "Looking at a crop, knowing I helped grow it, wondering how to improve, it doesn't get better than that."
 
The company, managed with his sister Cindy, has harvested oysters and quahogs since 1997, farming 12 to 20 million oysters annually. Considering it takes four years to grow an oyster on the water's surface, and six years on the bottom, that's quite an achievement. “We add nothing to the oyster during processing, so our product is organic, totally natural. It's what consumers want,” says Dockendorff. With the rapid growth of food tourism in P.E.I., new customers are increasely turning up at his facility. "We don't advertise. People find you."

Food Island Partnership launched Food Xcel on November 30th, 2018 at the Startup Zone with guest speakers Peter Van Stolk ( Founder of Jones Soda) and Dana McCauley (CEO Blue Unicorn Innovation). 
 
Food Xcel has been developed to help aspiring food entrepreneurs move their idea forward through a 14 week program that includes combination of progressive workshops, networking opportunities with food agencies, industry experts, and entrepreneurs and a chance to compete for a $25,000 award from Innovation PEI's Ignition Fund.
The Safe Food Canadians Regulations (inspection.gc.ca/safefood) begin coming into force on January 15, 2019. The new consolidated regulations will require food businesses that import or prepare food for export or to be sent across provincial or territorial borders to have licences, as well as preventive controls that outline steps to address potential risks to food safety. They will also help reduce the time it takes to remove unsafe food from the marketplace by requiring businesses to trace their food back to their supplier and forward to whom they sold their products.

Food Bank sets goal of 2,000 turkeys during Feed A Family Campaign

Mike MacDonald knows P.E.I.'s Upper Room Food Bank is about to get busier — the general manager expects to see about 2,000 families turn to it for food over the holidays.

"The Christmas season and the winter season are extremely busy at food banks at food banks across the province," he said.

"Each year we see about 2,000 families coming to food banks across the province looking for help at Christmas."
