Grief, Racial Trauma & Wellness
during a Global Pandemic

As BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) communities, we are constantly faced with systemic obstacles and challenges in meeting our Wellness & Mental Health needs. Now, we are being faced with an additional burden to navigate in protecting our well-being; a Global Pandemic. Although this additional obstacle can feel overwhelming, we can still continue to engage in collective support and healing.

Part of healing and building resilience through this pandemic is in addressing the intense grief that we are experiencing on so many levels. Job losses, financial insecurity, loss of routine and inability to engage in family gatherings, celebrations, etc. have also caused a great source of grief during this time. Additionally, loss of life is sadly at the forefront of any pandemic, and we are now seeing the impact health disparities and systemic racism has on Black and Brown communities, with Black and Brown folx being disproportionately impacted by Covid-19.

Unfortunately, as BIPOC folx, we are forced to live in the intersects of marginalization and oppression. A pandemic pauses many things, but Racial Trauma is not one of them. As we begin to navigate this "new norm," Anti-Blackness and White Supremacy is still rampant in our society; Brown children are still in cages; and Mass Incarceration of Black and Brown bodies separated families long before this pandemic arrived.

It feels overwhelming because it is. It feels heavy because it is. It feels hopeless because that is what Systemic Racism & Oppression is designed to make us feel. So where do we find hope when we feel so hopeless? Community give us hope; Mutual Aid gives us hope; A self-less act of kindness gives us hope; A child's laughter gives us hope; Solidarity gives us hope; Rest gives us hope; Mother Nature gives us hope; Prayer & Mediation gives us hope; and the last thing a White Supremacy, Capitalist society wants us to feel is hope, because that is where resiliency lives.
