Holistic mental health is a more recent buzz word, but in traditional cultures, it has been practiced for centuries. Unfortunately, in many Western societies, preventative medicine has not always been valued or practiced. In the most recent years, and after several millions of dollars put into research to "prove" that a holistic approach is a more sustainable and effective one, the mental health field is now looking into ways of supporting individuals in their mental health journey from a "whole" person perspective.
This approach, of course, is not new. For centuries, traditional healers believed that in order to "treat" someone, whether it was for a physical or emotional ailment, a full evaluation of the person and their environment needed to be completed. This approach does not just treat the presenting problem only but the entire person.
There are several holistic approaches that we can begin incorporating today to help prevent and increase our over all mental health wellness.
