Rest as Ancestral Wisdom and Healing;
How Rest is Needed for Our Collective Liberation

2020 has definitely been a year of immense collective awakening. We have collectively experienced so much loss, uncertainty and a sense of urgency to fix, find solutions and heal centuries of ancestral wounds.

In order to truly heal, we must also take time to acknowledge the trauma caused by White Supremacy and Capitalism and the need to be constantly "producing." As BIPOC folx, our ancestors did not have the ability to slow down or rest. Even now, many of us find it very difficult to be still, to stop the never-ending list of "to do's" in our heads.

Rest means taking time to slow down, sleep/nap when our bodies are asking us to. Rest can also mean engaging in the things that bring us joy and calmness. Lexico.com defines rest as "an instance of period of relaxing or ceasing to engage in strenuous or stressful activity," and Merriam-Websters.com defines rest as "peace of mind; free of anxieties."

Below are some ways you can engage in rest and begin reclaiming your ancestral wisdom and medicine for collective liberation:
  • Engage with Nature
  • Learn about traditional foods/recipes
  • Garden/grow food
  • Learn to sew/knit/weave/embroidery
  • Engage in traditional Spiritual practices
  • Meditate (if it feels safe to do so)
  • Yoga
  • Journal/Dream Interpretation
  • Energy Healing/Reiki
  • Chakra Balancing (see link below)
  • Soundbath (see link below)
  • Humming (Vagus Nerve Activation; see link below)
  • Tea/Herbal Remedies
  • Aromatherapy
  • Water/Shower Ritual (see link below)
  • Deep Breathing/Breath Work
  • Crying (honoring your emotions)
  • Laughing/Singing
  • Being in Community with others that honor our spirit and rest
Remember...we are the manifestation of our Ancestor's prayers. We carry wisdom & medicine in our DNA.
