KATHYRN KRONICLE

October 2018
MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION

As we write this message it is currently snowing outside and students and staff are coming to school with snow pants, winter boots and toques.  This weather provides another reminder that we are well into another school year.  The start of the year nervousness  is now gone and we have moved into curriculum objectives for this year.  A reminder that one of the best ways to stay updated on how your student is doing is through PowerSchool.  You can find the link for PowerSchool on the homepage of the Kathyrn webpage. Teachers are posting marks and comments about academic progress on a regular basis.   If you are having trouble getting into Powerschool or when you get in you can not see academic feedback from teachers please call the school and we can help out.

As you can see below we have a great deal of exciting events happening in October and early November.   While we have included school wide events in the newsletter there are many other classroom occasions where volunteers are needed and wanted.  While we understand that people are very busy if you have time and would like to volunteer at the school we would love to have you.  This can include anything from special events, to reading with students to helping with classroom decorations.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact Luella Anderson at the school or your classroom teacher.

As always if you have any questions about what is happening in the school or why something is done the way it is please call.  Our students benefit when the school and home work closely together to enrich the learning experience of everybody.

SNAP SHOTS AT KATHYRN
It must be the middle of September again.  Kathyrn School hosts its annual Welcome Back BBQ!! Along with many current and past students and families we had a surprise visit from our Superintendent of Schools Greg Luterbach
Our students did a great job at the first Terry Fox run in many years at Kathyrn School.  As a team we raised over $400 for cancer research.  A big thank you to the Grade 6 class who organized the event.
Student Leadership has once again begun to organize and run events through the school.  This includes a craft club every few weeks at lunch and intramurals in the gym.  So exctied to see what this amazing group of individuals come up with this year.
STEAM challenge. Build something in 20 minutes and explain what you built.
Taking a moment during the busy day for some Mindfulness.
DAVID BOUCHARD IS COMING TO KATHYRN SCHOOL
On October 25th Kathyrn School is very excited to welcome David Bouchard.  He will be doing two presentations on that day, the first will be at 9:00 am for our Elementary Students and the second is at 10:00 am for our Middle School Students.

Canadian Métis author and literacy advocate David Bouchard has produced more than sixty books for readers of all ages, including three guides on reading for parents and educators.

A teacher and principal, he is particularly concerned with Aboriginal-related issues. David is a much sought-after speaker for conference keynotes and school presentations on the topics of reading, literacy and aboriginal well-being.

David Bouchard’s books have won numerous awards including; The Governor General’s Award, the Lee Bennett Hopkins’ Poetry Award, the Silver Birch and the Red Cedar Awards, the Moonbeam Award... and many more.

In April 2009, David Bouchard was named a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2013, the David Bouchard Public School in Oshawa, Ontario opened its doors.

David lives in Victoria, British Columbia with his wife Vicki and their daughter Victoria.

LITERACY AT KATHYRN
There's something magical about reading books aloud to children.  It opens their minds and hearts to reading and sparks a sense of curiosity that can energize a lifetime of learning.  Our Wee Read program is about getting young students in kindergarten, grade one and grade two excited about reading.  We are looking for volunteers to share their love of books by reading aloud, playing vocabulary games and talking about stories that inspire them when they were children.  Can you spare an hour a week to share some magic? Please let Mrs. Hassett know if this is something you would be interested in.
KATHYRN SCHOOL CASINO VOLUNTEERS
As was indicated in the September Newsletter on November 3rd and 4th Kathyrn School is scheduled to once again volunteer at a Calgary Casino.  Typically this fundraiser will generate approximately $40,000 that is then used to directly enhance the learning experience of students attending Kathyrn School. Due to the popularity of this form of fundraising the typical wait between casinos is 3 years.

We have been assigned to the Century Casino (1010 42 Ave SE).  While most positions have been filled for the weekend we are in need of a few last individuals.  If you are able to volunteer please contact the school.

Thank you all for your help and time with this effort!
SCHOOL COUNCIL
Our next School Council meeting is Wednesday October 10th at 7:00 pm.  This council meeting will include a presentation by our School Trustee Norma Lang on Rocky View Schools progress around developing the 2019 -2023 Four Year Plan.  The Four Year plan is Rocky View Schools Road map and defines how as a division we can continue to provide the best educational experience for our students.  If you are interested in hearing where we are going this would be an excellent opportunity to get a sneak peak and also have your voice heard.

We look forward to seeing you!
KATHYRN SCHOOL IS PEANUT AWARE

In response to the growing number of food allergies and peanut allergies, Kathyrn School is a peanut aware building. The staff of Kathyrn School believes that with proper awareness and education we can help to reduce and prevent peanut reactions. Our plan continues to be centered on bringing awareness of the seriousness of these types of allergies.

As is present on our website “We ask that all students refrain from bringing peanut products to the school such as peanut butter, crackers with peanut butter, any candy that may have peanuts in them and of course peanuts themselves.”

In the case that your student has a peanut allergy, we ask that you please inform the school and make sure that not only does your child have their own epipen on their person, but that the front office also has an up to date epipen stored. Please be advised that your student should know/be familiar with when and how to use their epipens and ensure that you have made contact with their homeroom teacher to demonstrate how to use your student’s epipen.
